About this file

This statement of work outlines gene knockout services required by the US Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service. The contractor will be expected to knockout two soybean genes identified by the government as controlling rhizobium nodulation, verify the knockout, and provide T1 seeds from two soybean mutant lines. The period of performance is 11 months from receipt of gene information and funding. Deliverables will include plasmids, T1 seeds, glycerol stocks, and a project report. The goal is to validate genes that reduce the need for nitrogen fertilizer and improve soybean nodulation and nitrogen fixation efficiency.

STATEMENT OF WORK (SERVICES) (SOW)

GENERAL INFORMATIONTitle of Project:

Characterization and Utilization of Genetic Diversity in Soybean and Common Bean and Management and Utilization of the National Rhizobium Genetic Resource Collection Statement of Need and Purpose:

The purpose of this request is to verify that the genes we identified are those that control the rhizobium nodulation on soybean roots.

Background Information and Objective:

Reducing the need for nitrogen fertilizer is essential for low-input sustainable agriculture and protecting waterways. Our lab will identify novel genes controlling rhizobium nodulation and determine the underlying mechanism controlling the trait. The new knowledge of rhizobium and host plant interactions will result in the improvement of soybean nodulation and enhanced nitrogen-fixation efficiency.

Through field testing, genetic mapping and sequence analyses, we identified candidate genes that control rhizobium nodulation on soybean, thus we need to knockout these genes in order to validate that these genes are responsible for the nodulation. This proposed work is relevant to the NP301 Action Plan, Component 1. Crop Genetic Improvement; Problem Statement 1A: Trait discovery, analysis, and superior breeding methods. they are also relevant to the NP301 Action Plan Component 2, Plant and microbial genetic resource and information management; Problem Statement 2B: Microbial Genetic Resource and Information Management.

Period of Performance:

The period of performance for this contract will be within 11 months after the gene information and the fund are transferred to the contractor.

SCOPE OF WORKGeneral Requirements:
