About this file

This document is a statement of requirements for a high-speed camera system needed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology. The camera must be capable of recording up to 1 billion frames per second to provide high-speed imaging of mechanical impacts between 10-1000 meters per second for a new microballistic mechanical test instrument. It must have a compact physical footprint of 60 by 50 by 40 centimeters excluding protrusions and weigh no more than 35 kilograms. The camera sensor is specified as a minimum 1360 by 1040 pixel resolution intensified CCD with 12-bit depth coupled to fiber optics. The system must be able to capture up to 12 image frames per event at rates up to 11 million frames per second or two sets of 6 frames each at 1 billion frames per second. Frame timing must be programmable from 0 to 10 milliseconds in 1 nanosecond increments.

STATEMENT OF REQUIREMENTS

BFPS High Speed Camera System

I. BACKGROUND INFORMATION

One black and white high-speed digital camera, capable of recording at 1 Billion Frames per Second (BFPS), is needed for the construction of a new microballistic mechanical test instrument. The camera is critical to this new instrument in order to provide high-speed imaging of a mechanical impact event between a microprojectile and the test specimen at impact velocities ranging from 10 m/s to 1000 m/s.

The camera system must be compact and portable as it will be mounted on a sample testing platform with a weight and size limit indicated below. It shall be of sturdy one-piece construction with the camera head incorporated into the processor.

II. SCOPE OF WORK

The Contractor shall deliver One ultra-high-speed camera, inclusive of lens attachments that meets the following specifications

III. SPECIFICATIONS

1. System Components:

1.1. Camera body

1.1.1. Must have physical dimensions no larger than 60 cm length by 50 cm width by 40 cm height (excluding protrusions).

1.1.2. Must not exceed 35 kg in weight.

1.1.3. Must have ability for live video feed via VGA connecter.

1.1.4. Must have the ability to trigger image capture using TTL pulse via BNC connector.

1.1.5. 100MB Ethernet port for computer control and download.

1.2. Camera sensor’s light sensitive area must be at minimum:

1.2.1. Intensified CCD sensors that are fiber optic coupled for maximum sensitivity.

1.2.2. 1360 pixels by 1040 pixels spatial resolution.

1.2.3. 6.45 um by 6.45 um square pixel size with 12 bit depth.

1.2.4. Dynamic resolution >36 lp/mm using P46 phosphor MCP tubes.

1.2.5. F-mount lens mounting shall both be provided at no extra cost.

1.2.6. Extension tubes for connection to 10X and 20X microscope objectives.

2. Operating Characteristics:

2.1. Can capture up to 12 image frames per event at frame rates up to 11 Million Frames per Second with equal interframe times.

2.2. Can capture two sets of 6 frames each at up to 1 Billion Frames per Second in each set.

2.3. The 6 frames in each set can be taken at the same time for increased dynamic range.

2.4. Can be programmed with interframe times from 0 nanosecond (ns) to 10 milliseconds (ms) in 1 nanosecond steps.

2.5. All frames are generated from the same clock so frame to frame timing jitter is <1 ns.

2.6. Has independently programmable interframe times for each of the 12 frames.

2.7. Has independently programmable gain for each of the 6 channels.

2.8. Has independently programmable exposure times for each frame from 3 ns to 10 ms in steps of 1 ns.

2.9. The frame sequence can be driven from a pulse train generated from an external source.

2.10. Has a periscope for Through the Lens viewing for easy focus and alignment

2.11. No optical distortions to the images. Frames can be aligned to within 1 pixel of each other using software alignment.

2.12. Has a built in electro-mechanical Iris from f2.8 to f22 for control of light input.

2.13. Has up to 12 additional programmable output pulses to drive flash lamps and lasers.

2.14. Has two input trigger sockets and a built in Velocity Trap for synchronizing the first frame capture to moving events with zero jitter irrespective of unexpected velocity changes.

2.15. Can be upgraded to capture a total of 32 frames.

IV. INSTALLATION

The Contractor shall install the instrument at NIST, Gaithersburg, MD. Installation shall include, at a minimum, uncrating/unpacking of all equipment, set-up, and hook-up of all equipment, instrument start-up, demonstration of instrument performance with the specifications and removal of any trash. The high speed camera system shall operate to manufacturers specifications upon installation. Installation shall be coordinated with the NIST Contracting Officers Representative (COR). Installation of the system shall occur within 30 days after delivery.

V. WARRANTY

The Contractor shall provide, at minimum,1 year to include all parts, labor, and travel for the camera, to keep the instrument operating to manufacturers specifications.

VI. DELIVERY

Delivery shall be FOB DESTINATION and shall occur within 120 days. However, due to current access restrictions, delivery shall not take place until the Contractor coordinates with the COR and the Contracting Officer (CO). Prior to shipment, the Contractor must ensure NIST’s campus is open and accepting deliveries. If the restrictions of access to the campus impacts delivery schedules, a modification may be executed by the CO to establish an extended delivery timeframe.
