A. INSPECT, PRESERVATION, AND UNIT PACK IN ACCORDANCE WITH MIL-STD-2073-1D. INSPECT THE PACKING
IN ACCORDANCE WITH MIL-STD-1186 AND THE APPLICABLE CONTAINER SPECIFICATION.
B. CLEAN AND DRY ITEM BY ANY SUITABLE PROCESS BEFORE APPLICATION OF PACKAGING MATERIALS.
C. PREPARE OIL FILTER AND SECURING BRACKET IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE STEPS BELOW:
1. CUSHIONING: A-A-59135, CL 1, GR A, SIZE: 18 X 24 X 1/8, WRAP AND SECURE WITH TAPE
2. LOCATION: SECURE THE OIL FILTER ASSEMBLY TO THE OPPOSITE LEG OF THE FABRICATED ENGINE
STAND WITH A ZIPTIE, AFTER INTERNAL PRESERVATION IS COMPLETE.
D. THIS PROCEDURE DESCRIBES THE PROPER METHOD FOR PRESERVATION OF THE ENGINE.
OPERATE THE ENGINE AT HIGH IDLE UNTIL THE COOLANT TEMPERATURE IS 71˚C [160˚F]. TURN THE ENGINE OFF. DRAIN THE OIL AND COOLANT. INSTALL THE DRAIN PLUGS. TORQUE M18 PLUG TO 60 N.M, AND M22 PLUG TO 59 N.M. NOTE: THE OIL MUST MEET MILITARY SPECIFICATION MIL-PRF-21260, TYPE PE-10, GRADE 2, SAE 30. FILL THE ENGINE TO THE HIGH MARK. DISCONNECT THE FUEL LINES TO THE ENGINE FUEL FILTER AND THE INJECTOR RETURN LINE. NOTE: THE OIL MUST MEET MILITARY SPECIFICATION MIL- PRF-32033. FILL ONE CONTAINER WITH DIESEL FUEL, AND THE SECOND CONTAINER WITH PRESERVATIVE OIL. PUT BOTH FUEL LINES IN THE CONTAINER OF DIESEL FUEL. START THE ENGINE. AFTER THE ENGINE IS OPERATING SMOOTHLY, TRANSFER THE FUEL SUPPLY LINE TO THE CONTAINER OF THE PRESERVATIVE OIL. OPERATE THE ENGINE UNTIL THE PRESERVATIVE OIL FLOWS OUT OF THE INJECTOR RETURN LINE.
TURN THE ENGINE “OFF”. CONNECT THE FUEL LINES TO THE FUEL FILTER AND THE INJECTOR RETURN LINE.
DRAIN THE PRESERVATIVE OIL FROM THE ENGINE OIL PAN SUMP, THE AIR COMPRESSOR AND THE OIL FILTERS. REMOVE THE INTAKE AND THE EXHAUST MANIFOLDS. SPRAY PRESERVATIVE OIL INTO THE INTAKE AND EXHAUST PORTS IN THE CYLINDER HEADS AND IN THE MANIFOLDS UNTIL THEY ARE LIGHTLY
COATED.

EXHAUST MANIFOLD AND TORQUE THE FIXING SCREWS TO 43 N.M. REMOVE THE ROCKER LEVER
COVERS. SPRAY THE ROCKER LEVERS, VALVE STEMS, VALVE SPRINGS, VALVE GUIDES,
CROSSHEADS, AND PUSH RODS WITH PRESERVATIVE OIL. INSTALL THE ROCKER LEVER COVERS.
COVER ALL OF THE OPENINGS WITH HEAVY PAPER AND TAPE TO PREVENT DIRT AND MOISTURE
FROM ENTERING THE ENGINE.
E. SEE PAGES 3-9.
F. SEAL ALL OPENINGS TO THE INTERIOR OF ENGINE WITH CAPS/ PLUGS OF APPROPRIATE SIZE, NAS 847.
G. WRAP PRESERVED ITEM AND SECURE WITH TAPE.
H. THE UNIT CONTAINER IS THE SHIPPING CONTAINER.
I. PLACE BAG AROUND ITEM AND REMOVE EXCESS AIR FOR SECURE FIT. CLOSE BAG BY HEAT SEALING.
J. CONTAINER CLOSURE SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE APPLICABLE CONTAINER SPECIFICATION.
K. IN ADDITION TO MIL-STD-129 MARKINGS, THE UNIT CONTAINER SHALL BE MARKED ON THE TOP AND ONE SIDE WITH MINIMUM ½ INCH HIGH BLACK LETTERS “REUSABLE CONTAINER, DO NOT DESTROY”. IN ADDITION, THE TOP SHALL BE MARKED “REMOVE (LAG BOLTS OR SCREWS) TO OPEN CONTAINER”, USING
MINIMUM ½ INCH HIGH BLACK LETTERS.
