A. THE UNIT PACK SHALL PROVIDE PHYSICAL AND MECHANICAL PROTECTION.
B. CLEAN AND DRY ITEM BY ANY SUITABLE PROCESS BEFORE APPLICATION OF PACKAGING MATERIALS.
C. A QUANTITY OF 20 WHEELS SHALL BE SECURED ON A PALLET IN 4 EQUAL STACKS IN ACCORDANCE WITH STACKING AND LOADING REQUIREMENTS REFERENCED ON SHEET 2. WOOD BOXES CONFORMING TO SPECIFICATION PPP-B-621, STYLE OPTIONAL, CLASS 2, MAY BE USED IN LIEU OF PALLET WHEN THE TOTAL QUANTITY BEING PROCURED OR SHIPPED TO A SINGLE DESTINATION IS LESS THAN A PALLET
LOAD OR IS THE RESIDUAL OF THE CONTRACT QUANTITY.
D. IN ADDITION TO MIL-STD-129 MARKINGS APPLIED TO EACH SOLID TIRE AND TO THE PALLET LOAD, THE ITEMS SHALL CONTAIN SPECIAL SHELF LIFE MARKINGS IN ACCORDANCE WITH MIL-STD-129. THIS INCLUDES: DATE MANUFACTURED, DATE CURED, AND INSPECTION OR TEST DATE. THIS ITEM IS
CONSIDERED TO BE AN “EXTENDABLE, 36 MONTHS AFTER CURE DATE,” SHELF LIFE ITEM.
E. EDGE PROTECTORS SHALL BE PLACED UNDERNEATH STRAPPING TO PROTECT THE TIRES IN
ACCORDANCE WITH ASTM D 3953. SEE ITEM A ON ILLUSTRATION.
F. THE TIRES IN EACH STACK SHALL BE SECURED TOGETHER AS ILLUSTRATED. ITEM B, FLAT STEEL STRAPPING, ASTM D 3953, HEAVY ZINC COATED, GRADE 1, TYPE 1 OR 2, 3/4 INCH X .025 INCH, 4 REQUIRED. SEALS SHALL ALSO CONFORM TO ASTM D 3953, HEAVY DUTY, ZINC COATED, GRADE 1.
G. SECURE STACKS 1 THROUGH 4 TOGETHER AND TO THE PALLET BY PASSING STRAPS UNDER THE
CENTER STRINGER AND THROUGH THE STACKS AS ILLUSTRATED. ITEMS C AND D, FLAT STEEL
STRAPPING, CONFORM TO ASTM D 3953, HEAVY DUTY, ZINC COATED, GRADE 1, TYPE 1 OR 2, 1-1/4 INCH X .035 INCH, 4 REQUIRED. SEALS SHALL ALSO CONFORM TO ASTM D 3953, HEAVY DUTY, ZINC
