A. THE METHOD OF UNIT PACK PRESERVATION SHALL BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH MIL-STD-2073-1 FOR

MILITARY PRESERVATION METHOD 20. UNIT PACK SHALL PROVIDE PHYSICAL AND MECHANICAL

PROTECTION TOGETHER WITH A PRESERVATIVE. PACKAGING SHALL ALLOW THE ITEM TO BE EFFICIENTLY

DISTIBUTED AND PLACED INTO SERVICE WITH A MINIMUM OF DELAY. PACKAGING PROCESSES,

INCLUDING CLEANING, DRYING, AND PRESERVATION SHALL NOT REDUCE UTILITY NOR IMPAIR ITEM FUNCTION. ALTERNATE COMMERCIAL UNIT PACKS SHALL CONFORM TO ASTM D4169, DISTRIBUTION CYCLE 18 ASSURANCE LEVEL II. ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA ARE, ‘‘PRODUCT IS DAMAGE FREE,” AND, “UNIT

PACK METHOD OF PROTECTION IS INTACT”.

B. ITEM SHALL BE CLEAN AND DRY BEFORE APPLICATION OF PACKAGING MATERIALS.

C. FILL VALVE WITH PRESERVATIVE.

D. CLOSE ALL EXTERNAL OPENINGS WITH CAPS/PLUGS OF APPROPRIATE SIZE.

E. APPLY PRESERVATIVE TO EXTERIOR SURFACES WHERE PROTECTION FROM CORROSION IS NEEDED.

ALTERNATE MATERIALS PROVIDING EQUIVALENT PRESERVATION ARE ACCEPTABLE.

F. APPLY GREASE-PROOF, PROTECTIVE WRAP TO SURFACE ON WHICH LOCATING PINS ARE MOUNTED..

SECURE WITH TAPE. WRAP CONFORMING TO MIL-B-121, TY I, GR A, CL 2, SIZE 20 X 10 ( DOUBLE WRAP ), WAS USED ON EXAMPLE. SEE EXAMPLE ON PAGE 3. ALTERNATE MATERIALS PROVIDING EQUIVALENT

PROTECTION ARE ACCEPTABLE.

G. BLOCK WITH LUMBER CONFORMING TO ASTM D6199, GROUP I OR II, TO PROTECT ITEM . SEE EXAMPLE

BLOCKING ON PAGE 3. ALTERNATE MATERIALS FOR CUSHIONING ARE ACCEPTABLE. HOWEVER,

LOOSE FILL MATERIAL IS PROHIBITED. SELECTION OF ALTERNATE MATERIALS SHALL CONSIDER REUSE

AND DISPOSAL. CUSHIONING DESIGN SHALL ALSO CONSIDER DISTRIBUTION WEIGHT AND CUBAGE.

H. UNIT CONTAINER SHALL BE A BOX CONFORMING TO PPP-B-621, CL 2, ST 2. BOX SIZE FOR EXAMPLE IS 15 X 7-1/4 X 4-3/4. SEE EXAMPLE ON PAGE 3. AN ALTERNATE CONTAINER IS ACCEPTABLE. HOWEVER, ALTERNATE PACKING SHALL CONFORM TO ASTM D4169, DISTRIBUTION CYCLE 18, ASSURANCE LEVEL I.

ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA ARE, “PRODUCT IS DAMAGE FREE” AND “UNIT PACK METHOD OF PROTECTION IS

INTACT”.

I. PACKING:

LEVEL A: THE UNIT CONTAINER SHALL SERVE AS THE SHIPPING CONTAINER. WHEN THE TOTAL

QUANTITY TO BE SHIPPED TO THE SAME DESTINATION EXCEEDS 70 POUNDS, EXTERIOR PACKS

WITHOUT SKIDS SHALL BE PALLETIZED UNIT LOADS. PALLET HEIGHTS EXCEEDING 52 INCHES AND

UNSUPPORTED LOADS EXCEEDING PALLET DIMENSIONS ARE PROHIBITED. PALLET HEIGHTS

EXCEEDING 41 INCHES ARE PROHIBITED FOR OVERSEAS DESTINATIONS. GLUED LOADS AND LOADS EXCEEDING 2500 POUNDS SHALL NOT BE USED. UNTREATED, 4-WAY (PARTIAL) PALLETS CONFORMING TO NN-P-71, SIZE 40 X 48, SHALL BE USED. PARTIAL 4-WAY (CATEGORY 1) MULTIPLE USE (TYPE 2)

PALLETS CONFORMING TO ASME MH1.8 ARE ACCEPTABLE FOR DOMESTIC SHIPMENT.

ALTERNATE COMMERCIAL PACKING SHALL CONFORM TO ASTM D4169, DISTRIBUTION CYCLE 18,

ASSURANCE LEVEL II. ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA ARE, ‘‘ PRODUCT IS DAMAGE FREE” AND “UNIT PACK

METHOD OF PROTECTION IS INTACT”.

GUIDANCE FOR PALLETIZED UNIT LOADS FOR MILITARY / GOVERNMENT SHIPPERS IS SHOWN IN MIL-

HDBK-774.

J. UNIT PACK WEIGHT, CUBE AND SIZES ARE BASED ON A PREPRODUCTION PROTOTYPE AND ARE

PROVIDED FOR INTERNAL GOVERNMENT USE. THE CONTRACTOR SHALL VERIFY THE DESIGN OF

PACKAGING PRIOR TO PRODUCTION PACKAGING. PACKAGING VERIFICATION INCLUDING TESTS OF

ALTERNATE PACKAGING SHALL BE AVAILABLE FOR GOVERNMENT REVIEW. PACKAGING DESIGN

VERIFICATION AND TESTING ARE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE CONTRACTOR.
