Applicable general and referenced requirements of specification MIL---STD---2073---1 form part of this Instruction. Unless otherwise specified, materials will be minimum size IAWMIL---STD---2073---1. Tolerances shall be in accordance with material specifications.

(A) --- This SPI is not applicable for Interplant shipments. Packaging andmarking for interplant shipment is for supplies and materials that do not directly enter the military supply system. Typical interplant shipments are shipments froma vendor to a subcontractor or a prime contractor, or betweencontrac-tors and subcontractors, or from a vendor or contractor to a military arsenal, plant, or other activity for evaluation, immediate use, or further processing as specified in the applicable contract.
(B) ---Bagmaterial shall conform to A---A---3174 and have a minimum thickness of 2 mils. A commercially equivalent bag with a minimum thickness of 2 mils, with or without interlocking closure is acceptable.

(C) --- Place Bag, Individual Equipment Carrier in bag (step 1). Evacuate asmuch excess air as practical by hand. Fold excess bagmaterial back across and securewithASTMD5486, Type I, Class II tape. As an option, closure may be accomplished by heat sealing in accordance with the bag manufacturer’s rec-ommendation fordwell, temperature andpressureor a commercially equivalentbagwith interlocking closure which is closed by applying pressure with the fingers across the interlocking area.
(D) --- Packing. Level of pack shall be specified in the contract or order.
(E) Palletization and Unitization shall be in accordance with MIL---STD---147 and ANSI MH1 when:
---Shipments of identical items packed in four or more shipping containers exceed a total of 48 cubic feet per destination, except when the shipping containers are required to be skidded, or a quantity of four shipping containers per pallet exceeds the size or weight limitations for palletized loads.
---The total number of containers going to the same destination is 250 pounds or greater (excluding pallet), or a volume of 20 cubic feet or greater.
(F) --- PACKAGING QUALITY ASSURANCE PROVISIONS
1. Examination and Tests --- Shall be as specified in MIL---STD---2073---1, Appendix G, and:
a. Leakage and heat seal seam tests are required for sealed packages, exceptMethod 10 doesNOT require tests.
b. Packaged samples shall be examined inaccordancewith the preservationexaminations todetermine compliance. See MIL---STD---2073---1, Table G---1.
c. Compliant wood requirements shall be in accordance with the Contract. Examination shall include review and acceptance of wood packaging material, containers, pallets and dunnage.
d. The Level of Pack shall be as specified in the contract. The exterior shipping configuration shall include examination to verify compliance with MIL---STD---2073---1 guidelines for intermediate and shipping containers for the level of pack specified.
e. Packaged samples shall be marked IAWMIL---STD---129.
2. Sampling. Existing sampling plans in item specification or quality assurance provision shall take prece-dence as applicable. Otherwise, sampling shall include completed packs withdrawn from each lot in a random manner to make a representative sample sufficient in size to conduct all applicable inspec-tions and tests as specified in MIL---STD---2073---1, Appendix G.
3. Acceptance criteria. Samples that fail to comply with any of the applicable requirements shall be re-jected.
4. Certificates of Compliance. Certification shall be required for ALL packaging materials and container including applicable specifications and standards specified in this SPI; and palletization andmarking requirements. Format and content shall be in accordance with the contract and as a minimum shall

8465---01---529---1397 consist of documentationon company letterhead; contractorsname, address, phone number, contract number, item name, part number and/or national stock number, a statement specifying what it com-plies with (i.e. material, size, specification, standard), dated, printed name and title of certifying offi-cial, and shall be signed.
