Salient Characteristics
(4) each One-Sided Portable Covered Storage Area Racks. The proposed One-Sided Portable Covered Storage Area Rack will be located outdoors on an industrial pier and shall be capable of continuous operation over a minimum life of 20 years with minimal maintenance and upkeep. All materials should have suitable corrosion resistance in wet coastal environment subject to salt spray.
• Material o Coating Systems - All structural steel components should be hot dipped galvanized after fabrication. All bolts should be either galvanized or Type 316 Stainless Steel. Metal siding should be pre-galvanized then coated with coating system that has a minimum 20 year life in the environment. Rack including roll-up door color should be light grey in color. Metal rollup door should be of the manufacturer’s standard components with a suitable outdoor coating system. Lead base or chromium base paints are prohibited.
• Design o Structures should be designed so multi-units can be clustered or butted side by side and the back face of the unit tight to other objects or buildings.
o The One-Sided Portable Covered Storage Area Rack System should be designed by a
Registered Professional Engineer (PE) with the complete design submittal of drawings and calculations sealed by the PE.
o The rack system assemble consisting of shapes, tubes, or plates with a minimum thickness of 0.10 inches for all members including siding and roofing supports.
o The One-Sided Portable Covered Storage Area Rack System should be equipped with two heavy duty full length tubes for lifting by a forklift.
o Rack should be designed to be moved by a 20K Fork Lift (empty).
o Connections should be designed for the design loads with a minimum of 3,000 pounds and should utilize a minimum size of ½” bolts.
o The Portable Covered Storage Rack should be designed to accommodate 6 pallet locations (3 per shelf), each pallet 48” square by varying heights with each pallet weighing no more than approximately 3,000 pounds. With an overall 16,000 to 17,000 tare weight.
o Each pallet storage location should have a back-stop and side stops to contain the pallet inside of the shelf.
o Portable Covered Storage Area Rack System should be stable and not overloaded with any combination of open / filled pallet spots.
o Minor components such as side panels may connect using single bolt connections if the component has at least 4 bolts attaching it to the rack system.
o The roof should not exceed beyond the back wall of the rack system.
• Dimensions o Portable Covered Storage Area Rack should be a self contained rack unit designed to meet all design conditions identified or required by the cited Unified Facility Criteria and the International Building Code with the 4 corners of the unit supported on 12” x 12” pads that can be assumed to be at one elevation, and should be suitable to sit on a paved surface. No external anchorage is available or provided.
o The overall rack dimension should be approximately 7’ Deep x 12’ 6”- 8” Wide x 15’ to 16’ High o Each shelf should support 3 standard pallets or bulk items, shelf spacing 7’ + or -6” high.
o The base shelf should accommodate 6’ - 7’ high pallet loads, and upper shelf 6’ – 6” high pallet loads.
o Each pallet storage location shall have a back stop and side stops to contain the pallet inside of the rack.
• General Rack Information o The base of rack into which the fork tubes pass that uses steel plate or structural members on the 4 sides should receive the 4 foundation reactions at the corners thru a furnished 12” x 12” steel bearing plate. It is anticipated that the base will require a counterweight sized by the designer. Such counterweight may be a) Cast reinforced concrete placed into the galvanized steel box; b) Precast concrete blocks permanently anchored into the base frame; c) Self weight and added steel plates or blocks; or d) Sand or Gravel fill that is contained within a fully enclosed box. However the counter weight is designed, end product should support the 3 pallet spaces.
o Two continuous rectangular steel tubes with internal dimensions of approximately 5” - 6” x 11” - 12” spaced 4 feet apart for lifting of the rack system by a medium to large forklift. Three sided or intermittent provisions for the forks will not be acceptable.
o Opening of rack should have a 12’- 6” to 13” approximate front opening, with no obstructions (other than the upper shelf).
o The front of the enclosed rack unit should have an access point constructed with a manual operated rolling door utilizing industrial metal type material that will create a moisture/wind barrier for the overall enclosure. The door should have side tracks that restrain the door during wind. Operation should be by continuous chain or a manual crank system. Door should be designed for a minimum 30 MPH wind if able to be reset in the tracks by raising and refeeding into the tracks. Door design should be a of an regularly manufactured product in the indicated or larger size. Metal rollup doors fixture mounting point should not impede access to top rack in the open position (i.e.
roll mounted above enclosure).
o Metal manual rollup door on mounted on front at or above the roofline so it does not impede with the top shelf opening o Metal roofing should be a standard roofing product, minimum 26 ga galvanized with a coating system providing a minimum 20 year written warranty. Roofing system and fasteners should meet UL Class 90 wind uplift and be attached with screws with matching finish having a neoprene washer.
o The roof should be sloping at a 2:12 slope away from the front opening and not have a rear gutter or other protrusions.
o Metal siding should be a 1-1/2 inch box rib profile with a minimum of 20 gage in a Gray, bare galvanized finish. Siding system and fasteners should meet UL Class 90 wind uplift and be attached with screws with matching finish having a neoprene washer. Flashings should match the adjacent siding.
