Requirements / Specification Document

TITLE: 2224 nm Laser System

Requesting Laboratory / Division / Group:

Communications Technology Laboratory Radio Frequency Technology Division Radio Frequency Fields Group (672.02)

General Statement of Need:

The RF Fields Group requires a single-frequency, tunable diode laser system for the range of 2200 nm – 2300 nm. This laser system will be used for interacting with Rydberg states of Cesium atoms in a new 3-photon configuration. The laser will have to work in concert, and be fully compatible with existing laser systems, in the laboratory from Toptica Photonics.

Items and Ancillary Services:

Item 1: Diode Laser-Pumped Optical Parametric Oscillator 2224nm Quantity: 1 EA Specifications: 1.1 The 2224 nm laser system must only use diode lasers as light sources. The final output must operate nominally at 2224 nm and be derived from a pigtailed continuous-wave 1064 nm (CW) diode seed laser, power-boosted in a fiber amplifier, optically isolated, and fiber coupled into a continuous-wave optical parametric oscillator (cw-OPO) head. The nonlinear process should generate a mid-infrared (MIR) coherent signal beam and idler laser light.

1.2 Full coarse tuning must span 1.45-2.07 um (signal) and 2.19 - 4.0 um (idler) without optics exchange.

1.3 Output power: >2W (Signal), >1W (Idler)

1.4 Linewidth: < 2MHz, or < 100 kHz with line narrowing option

1.5 Idler mode hop-free tuning range: > 30 GHz

1.6 Output Beam Quality: M^2 < 1.2

1.7 Option for fast frequency modulation and frequency locking

1.8 Must have fiber coupling of outputs.

1.9 Must have options for high performance frequency locking to an external reference.

1.10 Must have connection for fast modulation (AC & DC coupled)

1.11 Must have Air sealed frequency converting bowtie cavity

(manufactured from a solid block with entrance/exit windows with temperature controlled, AR coated crystal. Crystal and PZT mirror can be adjusted without opening the resonator.

1.12 Must have Beam shaping optics for frequency converted output dedicated output ports for residual pump, signal and idler beams.

1.13 Must be able controllable using computer though (TCP/IP, USB) and controlled through Labview and python SKD. Free APIs for LabView and Python

1.14 There must be beam-shaping optics for symmetrizing the final idler and signal output beam profiles of the OPO system.

1.15 Must have low noise and drift, high resolution current, temperature, and piezo drivers.

1.16 Compatible with existing Toptica Photonics laser systems and controls.

Item 2: Pump Laser 1050nm Quantity: 1 EA Specifications: 2.1 Diode laser at 1050nm as seed laser to reduce the free-running linewidth to <100 kHz.

2.2 Continuous mode-hop-free tuning over wavelength range

required for Item 1.

2.3 Laser controller.

Item 3: Fiber Coupling Ports for Pump and Signal Quantity: 1 EA Specifications: 3.1 FC-APC Connectors.

3.2 Single-mode, polarization maintaining fibers for pump (1064nm) and signal (1450-2070nm).

3.3 Fiberdock fiber coupling ports with lenses and alignment of port.

Item 4: Pound-Drever-Hall Module Quantity: 1 EA Specifications: 4.1 Pound-Drever-Hall Signal and Demodulation electronics.

4.2 Modulation at 5 MHz or 25 MHz.

4.3 Adjustable phase from 0 – 360 degrees.

4.4 Internal demodulation.

4.5 2 Channels, reference output.

Item 5: Fast Analog Control Module Quantity: 1 EA Specifications: 5.1 Analog PID regulator with < 10ns signal delay.

5.2 3 “I” stages, 2 “D” stages.

5.3 Remote control through TCP/IP: PC-CUI or command interface.

5.5 Two high-speed differential inputs.

5.5 Two feedback channels.
