About this file
This document is a Requirements/Specifications Document for a 500 MHz Lock-In Amplifier requested by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)/Communications Technology Laboratory (CTL). NIST is conducting market research through a Sources Sought announcement to identify potential vendors, including small businesses, that can provide the specialized equipment described in the document. The key specifications include a 4-channel lock-in amplifier with digital IQ demodulation, 500 MHz analog input bandwidth, and various software functions. Interested vendors are requested to submit capability statements with details on their company, products meeting the specifications, lead times, and small business status. NIST will use the responses to determine if a small business set-aside procurement is feasible before issuing a formal solicitation. The anticipated NAICS code is 334516 for Analytical Laboratory Instrument Manufacturing.

Requirements / Specification Document
TITLE: 500 MHz Lock-In Amplifier
Requesting Laboratory / Division / Group:
Communications Technology Laboratory Radio Frequency Electronics Division High-Speed Waveform Metrology (672.03)
General Statement of Need:
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST)/Communications Technology Laboratory (CTL) needs to measure small modulated signals up to 500 MHz center frequency in microwave and optical experiments. This will require a four channel lock-in amplifier with digital IQ demodulation of multiple arbitrary frequencies per channel.
Item Specifications and Quantities:
Item 1: 500 MHz Lock-In Amplifier Quantity: 1 Specifications: 1.1 DC to 500 MHz (or greater) analog input bandwidth on 4 input channels
1.2 50 Ohm or 1 Megaohm internally switched input terminations on input channels
1.3 20 nV/sqrt(Hz) or better typical input noise density at 10 MHz
1.4 4 V peak-to-peak or greater DC coupled input voltage handling
1.5 4 digital IQ (and R,Theta) demodulators capable of arbitrary user-specified center frequencies up to 500 MHz
1.6 4 digital PID controllers (operating simultaneously with specification 1.5) capable of transforming 4 independent demodulator amplitude or phase measurements to control outputs
1.7 4 high frequency outputs for sine frequency outputs with DC to 500 MHz analog bandwidth and +/-1 V and +/-5 V voltage ranges into 50 Ohm output termination
1.8 Software instrument functions including oscilloscope, spectrum analyzer, phasemeter, frequency response analyzer, function generator, and arbitrary waveform generator
1.9 External 10 MHz reference input and output
1.10 Flexible demodulator filtering with 1 us to 0.2 s or greater time constant range and 6,12,18,24 dB/Octave filter slopes
1.11 Simultaneous logging of data to host PC or internal storage at 100 kSamples/sec or better (continuous recording up to 10 hours)
1.12 BNC connectors on all specified inputs and outputs
1.13 Rack mountable fully enclosed instrument capable of hosting user interface and all signal processing with PC control of settings
1.14 USB and ethernet host PC connection interface
1.15 110-120 VAC 60 Hz powered
