The Grindstone South weed herbicide treatment area consists of hills, mountain slopes, fan remnants, and several drainages which hold intermittent flowing streams. Terrain is overall very hilly and steep, with mountain slopes ranging from 15-60%. Soils are gravelly loams with some areas of exposed bedrock and large cobbles. Elevation ranges from 5,200 to 6,700 feet. Three-quarters of the project area consists of dense Utah juniper and pinyon pine forestlands with an understory of Wyoming sagebrush and mixed, native perennial bunchgrasses and forbs. Some of these areas have been burned in the last thirty year and there many dead-standing, and dead-and-down snags. Intact tree stumps are also present, and many of these stumps are sharp and pose a threat to wheeled vehicle equipment. The eastern quarter of the project area consists of semi-dense to dense Wyoming sagebrush and rabbitbrush shrublands, with mixed perennial bunchgrasses and native forbs. Cheatgrass and annual forbs like desert Alyssum are found throughout the entire site. The steepness of the hillsides coupled with the dense stands of Utah juniper and dead tree snags from old fires will make treatment difficult for mechanized equipment in many parts of the project area.

If water is present during the time of application, the buffers for non-aquatically formulated herbicides will be maintained at 10 feet for application by handgun and 25 feet for application with boom equipment. Spraying up to the water’s edge (within the buffer) will require use of aquatic formulated herbicide and surfactant.
