Rawlins eDNA Inventory and Sampling – Backpack Sampler Introduction
This proposal is part of a multi-year project for the surveying and subsequent monitoring of aquatic and semi-aquatic wildlife located within the water systems of the Rawlins Field Office utilizing eDNA sampling. This project will improve our knowledge of local aquatic habitat and the species utilizing it, allowing for more effective habitat management. eDNA, or environmental DNA, is the DNA found as cellular material introduced into the environment by an organism, generally through skin cells, gametes or excrement. eDNA can persist in the environment for a significant period of time and can be detected, even in trace amounts, using specialized sampling equipment. Utilizing eDNA sampling technologies and subsequent analysis, RFO biologists will be able to detect a range of species and determine distribution and diversity across the vast number of perennial water systems located within the Field Office’s boundaries, including cryptic species not easily identified through traditional survey methods. This surveying technique will allow for a more efficient sampling of our aquatic habitat, allowing for a larger amount of areas to be surveyed in a single field season as compared to traditional methods.
This proposal is for the acquisition of the sampling equipment necessary to perform the above-described work.
Work Site Location
BLM-managed aquatic systems within the Rawlins Field Office jurisdiction. These systems may be lotic or lentic; perennial, ephemeral or intermittent.
Deliverables
The awarded shall be able to meet specifications outlined in the below specifications including battery type (lithium ion), backpack sampling equipment and self-preserving sample filters consistent with US Patents 11307118 and 11471837, these unique specifications allowing for intact data retrieval and global positioning records despite varying project timeframes and fluctuations in local conditions such as temperature, weather, remoteness and accessibility. The awarded should also be able to provide an alternative low-cost sampling unit (that still utilizes the above described self-preserving filters: US Patent 11471837).
