About this file
This document outlines specifications for a combustion carbon and nitrogen analyzer to be procured by the Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service Field Research Implementation and Information Delivery Northeast Area. Key requirements for the analyzer include the ability to analyze up to 1g of plant material compared to the competitor standard of 200 mg, catalyzed conversion of CH4 to CO2 for quantitative measurement of organic samples, automatic loading of more than 80 samples with ash discarding to reduce labor, use of durable stainless steel crucibles to simplify sample prep, upright crucible and combustion design to reduce errors, compatibility with helium or argon carrier gases to reduce running costs, a mass flow controller to manage gas flows for calibration stability, complete water separation using a three-stage condensation, membrane drying and chemical drying, Windows-compatible software for data entry, management and support, output of data to Excel and laboratory information management systems, and a minimum 10 year warranty on furnaces and detectors. The related solicitation is for this combustion carbon and nitrogen analyzer under opportunity number 12305B23Q0135-2.

Specifications Item will be used to analyze carbon and nitrogen content in plant and soil samples. These are foundational measurements for understanding nutrient dynamics, productivity, plant health, and climate impacts of agriculture.
Minimum requirements:
· Ability to analyze up to 1g plant material (competitor standard 200 mg)
· Catalyzed CH4 to CO2 conversion for quantitative measurement in organic (plant) samples
· Ability to automatically load >80 samples and discard ash for reduced labor
· Use of durable, stainless steel crucibles for sample loading to reduce labor
· Upright crucible and combustion design to reduce error and simplify sample prep of non-homogenous samples
· Ability to use helium or argon as carrier gasses, reducing running costs
· Mass flow controller to manage carrier and oxygen flow for long-term calibration stability
· Complete separation of water using a 3-stage path of condensation, membrane drying, and chemical drying
· Windows-compatible instrument software to facilitate data entry (with compatible scales), data management, and software support
· Data output to both Excel and to commercially available laboratory information management systems (LIMS/digital lab books)
· Minimum 10 year warranty on furnace and detectors
· Benchtop space usage under 24 inches
· On-site training and installation
