Specification document: Track mounted Drilling Rig System Gordon Osterman 21-Jun-22 The USDA-ARS Sustainable Agricultural Water Systems unit needs a drilling rig system on-hand to support a range of research tasks related to groundwater monitoring, drywell installation, and subsurface testing and logging activities. To this end, we require a system that meets the following specifications:
· The system must be operable by as few as two users with reasonable training, mechanical knowledge, and physical fitness.
· The system should not exceed 15,000 lbs and must be able to be towed on a 2-axle trailer
· The system must be track-mounted and be able to independently maneuver into drilling position
· The system must be able to fit into relatively tight areas, so should not exceed six feet wide and the mast should be able to fold to less than less than ten feet in height
· The system needs to support direct push drilling for well installation and soil core extraction with bi-directional rotation. We need direct push rods with outer diameters of 2.25” and 3.25”.
· The 2.25” rods must be compatible with two types of cutting shoes. The first type must be able to produce soil cores within an interior plastic liner that is 1.25” outer diameter. The second must be able to produce a larger quantity of coring material inside the rods with cutting shoe diameters ranging from 1.25” to 1.5”.
· The inner diameter of the 2.25” rods must be no less than 1.5” to accommodate a geophysical logging tool that is 1.4” diameter.
· The system needs to come with a hydraulic extruder kit
· Both sets of rods (2.25” and 3.25”) must come with expendable steel points and at least 20 five-foot-long rods
· The system needs to have hollow-stem augering capability. We need 4.5” outer diameter hollow-stem rods capable of installing 2” diameter well casings through the bore of the auger. The system must have at least 20 five-foot-long rods.
· The augering system needs a two-speed rotary head with at least 4000 ft-lbs of force and 150 rpm
· The winch kit must be capable of exerting 2,500 pounds of force
· The system must be able to run electrical conductivity, hydraulic profiling, and cone penetrometer testing on the same toolset from 1.5” diameter rods
· Enough rods must be included to reach 140 feet depth.
· The system must be able to anchor to the ground during cone penetrometer operations to exert 15 tons of pressure
· The cone penetrometer/electrical conductivity/hydraulic profiling tooling must have sub-foot resolution and must come with data visualization/export software for all data types
· Both direct push and testing rods must come with a rod wiper to clean rods
· The system needs a 48” tool rack
· The system needs a rod rack and drop rack system
· The system needs an external yoke vice attached to the system
· The system must also come with a set of extension rods and expendable 2.25” points compatible with the 2.25” direct push rods
