Primary Point-of-Contact:

Name: Heather Graham Organization Code: 691 Telephone Number: 301-949-5193 e-mail Address: heather.v.graham@nasa.gov

Background:

These pumps are necessary for the operation of the LTQ Orbitrap mass spectrometer system.

This repair, jointly funded by FLaRe and FY20 Tech Equipment funds, also includes the replacement of an onboard data acquisition unit component that is necessary for the instrument to communicate with an auxillary computer. This mass spectrometer will measure the molecular composition of liquid samples extracted from extraterrestrial materials and astrobiological analog materials. These repairs require the specialized knowledge of engineers trained by Thermo Electron, the sole manufacturer of the Orbitrap technology. External and GSFC collaborators have expressed the importance of having these measurements to understand and predict the molecular complexity of these materials in order to understand the origin of organic compounds from primitive asteroid sources as well as biological systems.

Scope of Work:

We require an Orbitrap mass spectrometer for simultaneous in situ measurements of organic compounds and their site-specific isotope composition. This system is uniquely capable to perform these measurements.

Description of Work:

The instrument requires the installation of three new turbopumps (Two HiPace 80 and one HiPace 300) that have experienced an electrical short and no longer work. These units must be secured to the instrument using a HiPace 300 bolt kit to prevent any vibration that can damage the optics of the instrument and inhibit high resolution data collection. This work will also require the installation of a new data acquisition unit for communication.

Deliverables:

The three HiPace Turbopumps, bolt kit, and Orbitrap Data Acquisition Unit will be delivered to B34:C180 at NASA Goddard and installed on the instrument no more than three months after approval.
