Text version
Sleep health may not capture actual sleep experience due to recall bias and differences between perceived and actual sleep quality and quantity. Wrist actigraphy will provide objective measures of sleep duration, quality, and timing. To fully capture sleep health also requires subjective assessments of whether sleep was restful or adequate and perceptions of daytime sleepiness. We will supplement actigraphy measures with daily reports of perceived sleep adequacy and daytime sleepiness ascertained upon waking and at bedtime. These daily measures, proximal to the experience being reported, may improve accuracy and minimize recall bias compared to assessments of recall over weeks or months.
The Actiwatch Spectrum Plus actigraphy device collects activity and sleep data along with an on-wrist sensor, multiple light measurements, event marker button entries, and study participant compliance over time. The data obtained from the Actiwatch Spectrum Plus devices can be scored, analyzed and interpreted with help from a collaborator who has experience conducting large (e.g., N >1,800) studies using actigraphy data and developed 'Ambulatory Monitoring Behavior Evaluation Rubicon' (AMBER), and data pipeline to enhance the rigor and reproducibility of actigraphy research using large samples.
AMBER is used for both analysis and management of sleep actigraphy data from Philips-Respironics devices. This device measures all of the study points needed and comes at a significant discount (70% off retail) and is significantly cheaper than other sleep devices such as the Nox Medical T3 (~$5500).
