Statement of Work XI3/Astromaterials Research Office Picosecond Laser System April 30, 2020

The Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science Division (ARES) at NASA JSC is designated as the Agency lead center for planetary sample analysis, cosmochemistry, lunar advanced science, and Mars fundamental research. A unique suite of analytical instruments allows for the fulfillment of this Agency responsibility. One of these instruments is a two-step laser desorption

/ laser ionization mass spectrometer (µ−L2MS) that enables the in situ spatially resolved organic analysis of astromaterials. The laser that forms the photoionization source for the (µ−L2MS) instrument incurred irreparable damage due to a facility anomaly in October 2019 driving the

ARES requirement for a replacement picosecond laser system. Timely restoration of the µ−L2MS instrument is critical to meeting Agency research goals that support human and robotic missions.

The following represent a minimum list of requirements for the picosecond laser:

• Continuously operation at a pulse repetition rate of 10 Hz.

• Single transverse mode operation without hotspots or artifacts present in the near-field spatial beam profile.

• Pulse duration of ~30 picoseconds for the fundamental (λ 1064 nm), with pulse-to-pulse width stability of ±1% or better.

• Pulse energy of ≥ 80 millijoules (mJ) for fundamental (λ 1064 nm), with pulse-to-pulse energy stability of fundamental to ±1% or better.

• Non-linear crystals for generation of 2nd, 3rd & 4th harmonics (λ 532, 355 & 266 nm) with pulse energies as listed below:

Laser Output Wavelength (nm) Pulse Energy (mJ)

Fundamental 1064 ≥ 80

2nd Harmonic 532 ≥ 40

3rd Harmonic 355 ≥ 20

4th Harmonic 266 ≥ 10

• On-site Installation at NASA Johnson Space Center.

• Hands on operator training.

• Warranty on parts and labor for 1 year, excluding consumables.

• Delivery 5 months or less after receipt of order.
