CARTER G. WOODSON
NATIONAL HISTORIC SITE
ORIGINAL TACTILE PORTRAIT
BACKGROUND
The Carter G. Woodson Home National Historic Site (CAWO) was established to honor the life and legacy of Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a pioneering figure for the study and celebration of African American history and culture.
Dr. Carter G. Woodson was a historian, author, and Civil Rights advocate, who is regarded as the Father of African American studies and creator of Black History Month (formerly Negro History Week). Still in circulation, Woodson created the Journal of Negro History and the Negro History Bulletin to highlight the historical achievements of African Americans. He founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, today, known as the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH). The Woodson home served as the headquarters for the ASALH from 1922 until 1971, and as the publishing house for Associated Publishers, Woodson’s publishing company. Associated Publishers was one of the few publishing companies that would print books, magazines and articles about African American history during the early and mid-Twentieth Century. Dr. Woodson is an icon within the African American community.
The historic home, regarded as the “birthplace” of Black History Month, is the main tangible fundamental resource remaining connected to Dr. Woodson. In his home he wrote many of his books, articles and held community meetings. Dr. Woodson’s scholarly work and advocacy contributed significantly to the cultural identity and awareness of Africans and African Americans in the United States and throughout the world.
A separate scope of work will oversee the fabrication and installation of interpretive exhibitions and multimedia at CAWO. The exhibitions include interpretive graphics, artifacts and other dimensional objects, AV media including film and interactive touchscreens, flipbooks, and interactives. The historic home will include lightly propped rooms that convey what it looked like during the later years of Dr. Woodson’s residency.
This custom artwork scope of work shall be completed in time for installation of the opening of the exhibition in 2023.
PURPOSE
The purpose of this contract is to develop one original tactile portrait suitable for use in permanent exhibits at the Carter G Woodson National Historic Site (See Attachment A Description of Woodcut Technique and Lighting).
SCOPE OF WORK
Independently, and not as an agent of the government, the contractor shall provide all labor, supplies, materials, facilities, travel and shipping (except as otherwise specified) necessary to provide one original woodcut portrait for use in the Carter G Woodson core exhibit.
Specifically, the contractor shall provide:
A. Post-Award Conference and Site Visit
The contractor shall attend a post award conference and site visit at the Carter G Woodson National Historic Site located in Washington DC, to meet with the Contracting Officer’s Representative (COR) and park personnel. The purpose of this meeting will be to review site conditions, discuss details of the project and receive and review government-furnished reference material.
The Contractor shall provide a written trip report to the COR enumerating all issues discussed and decisions made relative to the project, and their understanding of all decisions made during the site visit. In the trip report the Contractor shall also include all reference images intended for use to execute the final art.
B. Sketches
Preliminary Sketch The contractor shall render one preliminary sketch and proposed material board.
The submitted material board shall include the proposed color palette and materials.
Revised Sketch The contractor shall provide one revised sketch and material board based of the governments written review responses of the preliminary sketch. The revised sketch shall identify all the elements and materials to be included in the final woodcut portrait.
Both preliminary and revised sketches will be reviewed for materials, content, composition, and positioned into the exhibit layout so that the government may provide specific direction for the final woodcut portrait. Sketches shall be rendered at no less that 75% of final reproduction size. Trim marks shall be included on the preliminary and revised sketches at the scale of each sketch.
C. Artwork
Finished Woodcut Portrait The government shall travel to the contractor’s art studio to review and inspect the finished woodcut portrait. The finished woodcut portrait shall be an approximately 24” square sample portion of the brow, eyes, nose and a 5” of background required for government approval. The finished woodcut sample shall be reviewed and may require revisions prior to the artist carving the full piece.
Final Artwork
Intent, purpose and message This woodcut portrait, shall be scaled to a commanding size of approximately 5’x 8’ on a nominally 8’ x 8’ background, provides an iconic view of Dr. Woodson that will memorably communicate the scholar’s pride, character, and drive. As an element visitors will see before embarking on interpretation tracing Dr.
Woodson’s life, this piece will help establish the powerful vision that drove Woodson to the height of his achievements. This piece is intended to become a touchstone of the National Historic Site, while also offering visitors an opportunity for selfies that connect them with this towering icon, the definition of his visage being created by a grazing light accentuating the tactility of the “woodblock” printing process. To be clear, this "woodcut sculpture" is intended to be touched and reveals its mage thru intentionally raking light to create shadowed areas.
Woodcut Sculpture Details Post award of this contract the government will provide the artist reference files with scale dimensioning necessary to render a portrait in keeping with the pen-and-ink illustration from the February 1980 Washington Sun (Attachment A Description of Woodcut Technique and Lighting) into a subtly dimensional tactile portrait that appears to emerge directly out of the wall, which in this case is being "clad" with the artist's wood sculpture. The linework of the illustration will be translated into voids, V-cut out of the base sheet material, thought to be 2 layers of 3/4” AA plywood or MDF laminated into a nominally overall 1.5” thick panel.
In either case, the wood species or manufactured wood sheet material should impart a uniformly light wood grain appearance devoid of knots or other discolorations, approximating the look and tone of the honeycomb pattern found in (Attachment A Description of Woodcut Technique and Lighting).
The aim is what might loosely be called a negative woodblock that echoes and complements the style of art created by James Lesesne Wells for Woodson’s Associated Publishers’ journals and bulletins in the 1930’s. The design proposes this “woodblock” remain “un-inked” so that Woodson’s visage emerges through the texture, shadow, and form of the material into which is it routed, not by added color or ink. As stated with the woodblock samples in (Attachment A Description of Woodcut Technique and Lighting), the face of material most forward toward the visitor will provide the highlights, while the lines and hatching notched into that surface with render the shadows. All of the background around his head and shoulders will be “hand stroked back” to provide a deeper texture helping to feature the face and shape of the head.
The entire final artwork will be illuminated with grazing light from the track above to create all shadow definition (exhibit track light not in the scope of this contract). The woodblock carving is intended as an art piece in its own right, rather than just a means to create a print. The woodblock will be the opposite of what is typically done for printing: the raised areas will be light and the carved away areas will be the dark shadowing. This will not be achieved by inking but from grazing light. The v-grooves will be shadowed, and the uncarved areas brighter. To have a large wood sculpted panel is very unusual and is a requirement of this project. The final art will be installed by the exhibit fabricator using hidden fasteners (flush mounts or equal).
The artist is to interpret the references to compose a new, custom work of art for the exhibit. It is the design’s intent that the core of the artwork continues to be the depiction of Dr. Woodson shown in the photo (Attachment A Description of Woodcut Technique and Lighting), which is chosen for the qualities it captures, including a hint of a smile, prideful expression, and a sense of optimistic vision and courage.
