SPECIFICATIONS

“Autonomous Underwater Vehicle with High Resolution Camera and Lights”

BACKGROUND

The intent of these specifications is to describe the general design and function required for a 2-person portable self-propelled autonomous underwater vehicle (hereafter referred to as the AUV) with a fully integrated high-resolution camera and light system, a fiber-optic gyroscope inertial navigation system (FOG-INS), and additional specifications described below. The intended use of the AUV is to support scientific studies being conducted by the US Geological Survey - Great Lakes Science Center (GLSC) to use image analysis and photogrammetry to document species and habitats found in clear water lake environments. The AUV-integrated imaging system must be able to “fly” low-altitude missions (e.g., 1.75

m) above the lakebed while collecting clear and well-lit images with sufficient resolution to discern patterns and shapes of organisms and objects as small at 1 cm. The primary mode of deployment of the AUV will be from 25-foot research vessels with two crewmembers working without a lift of davit.

Therefore, it is necessary that the AUV be two-person portable and fit on the constrained 9-foot decks of GLSC’s small vessels. Finally, it is imperative that the AUV be (1) rugged and able to sustain jarring and jostling typical to field work on small vessels in rough waters and/or trailering on rough roads; and (2) able to operate reliably from the day of acquisition with minimal intervention from engineers or robotics specialists, neither of which are available on GLSC staff. Ruggedness and reliability will be assessed through interviews with users of the AUV systems. All specifications listed below shall be included in the base quote sub-total as specified.

Physical specifications

Maximum length of 110 inches and a maximum weight of 150 pounds for two-person portability without a davit or lift operating from small vessels

Maximum operating depth of at least 300 meters Operating speeds up to 5 knots Hull sections that are modular and easily swapped to adjust payloads on the fly

Power system

Lithium-ion battery with at least 3.0 kWh of energy available at full charge Estimated running time of at least 18 hours on a single battery charge Rechargeable battery section that can be charged on or off the AUV and be hot swapped in the field to enable extended duration work External port for charging batteries while installed on AUV

Navigation systems High-accuracy, solid-state fiber-optic gyroscope-based inertial navigation system (FOG-INS) that is fully integrated on AUV and tested. System must support accurate heading, roll, pitch, speed and position. FOG-INS must be capable of using data from following external sensors (if installed) with a Kalman filter to estimate underwater positions: GPS, digital compass, long baseline (LBL) positioning system, ultra-short baseline positioning system, electromagnetic log, doppler velocity log, sound velocity profiler, and depth sensor. Minimum performance required for FOG-based INS: heading (0.15 deg), roll pitch (0.05 deg), positional accuracy (0.3% of distance traveled), power consumption (12 watts). Vendor must provide proof that the proposed FOG-INS has been fully integrated into their AUV and share documentation that the vehicle performs in various field conditions at or above the minimum performance specifications listed above.

WAAS-corrected GPS

Communications

LBL underwater acoustic communications must have the ability to issue basic commands to vehicle while underwater and to report AUV status back to surface

All shipboard equipment for communicating with AUV using LBL must be provided as part of the base quote

140G0223Q0151 Page 5 of 46

Iridium satellite communications to broadcast status and position Antenna mast and/or fin configuration with navigation lights that include infrared and visible

LEDs WiFi communications to upload mission files and check vehicle status when at the surface of the water

Computation and data Data transfer via an external ethernet port or USB3 with a minimum speed of 1 gigabit per second Minimum of 3 Tb of onboard hard drive storage in one or several drives Ruggedized laptop must be provided with necessary software and configuration to operate AUV

Other sensors Dual frequency side-scan sonar 900/1800 kHz Doppler velocity log (DVL) with a minimum bottom lock of 200 m and ADCP data collection Depth sensor and digital compass Seabird Ecopuck or equivalent water quality sensor(s) with capability to estimate phycocyanin, chlorophyll a, turbidity, and colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM)

Camera system

Fully integrated color still image camera with a minimum resolution of 4112 x 3008 pixels (i.e., 12 Megapixels), a 12 mm lens, and a minimum frame rate of four frames per second

Camera system must have sufficient strobe or “always-on” light(s) to illuminate the lakebed in clear water at range of 5 m or more and allow for collection of well-focused still images at forward speeds of 3 knots with minimal blur. Vendor must provide sample data to allow for evaluation of this specification

Camera system and lighting must be seamlessly integrated into, or onto, the AUV hull, be powered by the AUV power system, and be rated to at least the same operating depth as the AUV (300 m)

Each image collected by the camera must be tagged with navigational data from INS for easy mapping and analysis

Software Mission planning software that allows for geographic plotting of missions, vehicle tracking, post-mission analysis and reporting must be included as part of base quote API must be provided to allow for integration of custom payloads Camera systems must have dedicated control and processing software with the ability to automate the following processes:

o Undistortion of images o Light leveling o Color correction

Other Must include integrated conductivity and temperature sensors Must have internal or external underwater locator beacon attached or installed Must include internal automatic leak detection Must include carrying case, stand, and wheeled carrying cart Must include basic spares kit Must include a minimum 1-year warranty to cover parts and labor for AUV system “Need by” date for FOB Destination delivery of AUV is June 1, 2024; preferably earlier.
