SPECIFICATIONS LIST
“Portable Ultra Short Baseline (USBL) Underwater Positioning System with Integrated Motion Compensation”
The intent of these specifications is to describe the general design, function, and software required for procurement of an Ultra-Short Baseline (USBL) underwater positioning system with an integrated GNSS-aided motion reference unit (MRU) or inertial navigation system (INS), tracking beacons, GPS antenna, and software necessary for its operation and configuration. The USBL System must be easily moveable and mounted by a single individual on vessels ranging from 4 to 30 m in length, and the top-side control system(s) must be compact to economize space on smaller vessels. The USBL System must meet the following specifications (all items on this list must be included as specified in the base quote sub-total):
Physical Specifications The system specific transducer must be composed of at least 4 hydrophones—the minimum number of hydrophones required to form a 3D antenna and enable unambiguous positioning of the beacon on 3 axes (X, Y and Z).
The system must have an aperture of at least 200° allowing for beacon tracking at depths less than the antenna for tracking and recovering equipment and divers at the water surface.
The system must not require calibration in the field.
The system must have horizontal tracking.
The system must be portable as it will be installed on different boats.
The system must suit installation aboard vessels from 4 to 30 meters in length and be able to operate in rivers, streams, lakes, and ponds.
“Top side” processor must fit in space no larger than one cubic foot.
Weight of “wet end” (including head unit) must be 25 lbs. or less.
The system’s array must be 0.55 meters or less in length and 0.30 meters or less in width so that it is easily handled by one person and easily mounted to any vessel.
Any topside system components must be totally protected against dust and splashing water.
The transducer assembly must be operable in a pole mounted configuration.
The system must operate in water temperatures ranging from -5° C to 35°C in high current;
salt, brackish, or freshwater; and high sediment conditions.
The complete system must be capable of accepting 9-60 VDC and 110-230 VAC and operate between 10-100 Watts for use with standard marine batteries (operation on 12V DC power is required).
Beacons must be less than 2kg, and be no bigger than 100 x 350 mm, with a survival depth of up to 600m.
All beacons must be battery powered and rechargeable.
GPS unit mush have an integrated GNSS module for seamless integration with the USBL acoustic head for rapid and improved positional accuracy.
Functional Specifications The system must:
Require no calibration for rapid deployment;
Be able to track at least 40 beacons simultaneously;
Have 3-D acoustic array geometry for improved accuracy and unambiguous positioning underwater;
Provide absolute georeferenced position for the beacon;
Be compatible with all major navigation suites;
Have horizontal tracking;
Possess an ethernet interface of 1Gb/s or greater;
Have position accuracy of at least 0.5% of slant range;
Have a maximum operating range of at least 900 m;
Operate at a frequency of 20-30 kHz;
Have a time base synchronized to Universal Time Coordinated (UTC) via GNSS 1 pulse per second (1 PPS);
Allow for real-time display of the underwater tracks of multiple beacons, and post-survey analysis of these track lines;
Comply with the International Hydrographic Organization Standards for Hydrographic
Surveys (S-44) “Special Order” requirements for depths of 1m to 50m.
Navigation Specifications The system must achieve at least the following real-time component accuracies using
GNSS Real Time Kinematic (RTK) correction:
o Positioning Accuracy of at least 0.5% of the slant range;
o Range Accuracy of at least 20 mm;
o Heading Accuracy of at least 2.0°;
o Pitch/Roll Accuracy of at least 1.0°.
Software specifications The system must be compatible with Hypack, QINSY or NAVIPAC data logging software.
Software must be included with the system for data collection, and system configuration.
Other Vendor shall warranty equipment and software by providing repair and/or replacement for a period of at least 1 year.
In the event that additional head unit(s) must be used underwater to achieve the required positional accuracy (rather than simply carrying a beacon), these must be supplied with an underwater power source that can be managed safely by an individual SCUBA diver or submersible vehicle.
