SECTION B. CONTINUATION OF STANDARD FORM 1449

B.1. Contract Type

Firm Fixed-Price

B.2. Performance Based Work Statement

B.2.1. Introduction

B.2.2. The purpose of this contract is to acquire open source software package written in Python, utilizing Holoviz and PyGridgen to create a package for interactive construction of orthogonal curvilinear grids. The contractor assigned will furnish an open-source product that provides this functionality, along with a suite of tests that confirm the tool is functioning as designed.

B.2.3. Background

USGS scientists are at the forefront of research that is critical for decision-making, particularly through the development of coastal oceanographic and sediment transport models that simulate and forecast (1) transport and dispersal of water borne materials, (2) morphological changes in in embayments, along coastlines and in marshes, and (3) predict water level and wave impacts to heavily populated areas due to climate change.

The first step in modeling a specific region is generating a numerical grid to solve the governing equations on.

The main software we use for this work is the Coupled Ocean, Atmosphere, Wave and Sediment Transport (COAWST) modeling system (Warner et al), which requires a orthogonal curvilinear mesh. This puts specific requirements on the tools used to generate these grids: they must solve a specific set of equations, but also allow the user flexibility to design a grid with appropriate geometry and resolution for the problem at hand.

We currently have an open source package “pygridgen” (https://pygridgen.github.io/pygridgen/) that solves the necessary equations, but we lack an effective Graphical User Interface for developing the grids. Currently too much time by scientists on mundane and repetitive procedures when designing a grid, a problem that could be solved by better interactive tools for specifying grid boundaries and focusing resolution in areas of interest.

Fortunately, we are now in the position to develop a grid generation tool that leverages recent investments by the US Army Corps of Engineers to make interactive visualization tools for Python that run either in reproducible science notebooks, or as stand-alone web applications (https://holoviz.org).

B.2.4. Definitions/Applicable Documents

Open-source product: open source products include permission to use the source code, design documents, or content of the product. It most commonly refers to the open-source model, in which software or other products are released under an open-source license as part of the open-source-software movement

Python: an interpreted, high-level, general-purpose programming language

HoloViz: a suite of Python packages to allow interactive visualization and dashboarding embedded in Python workflows or as web applications.

Orthogonal curvilinear grids: system is a system of curvilinear coordinates in which each family of surfaces intersects the others at right angles.

PyGridgen: Python interface to Pavel Sakov's C-Language based orthogonal curvilinear grid solver.

COAWST: A Coupled Ocean, Atmosphere, Wave and Sediment Transport modeling system that enables simulations that integrate oceanic, atmospheric, wave and morphological processes in the coastal ocean.

Pangeo: A flexible, scalable, open-source framework for scientific analysis and visualization deployed by USGS on the Amazon Cloud.

B.2.5. Scope

140G0120Q0181 Page 5 of 26

Vendor will provide a plan for developing the package built on the HoloViz tools for graphic and the PyGridgen package for solving the differential equations for grid generation. The HoloViz tools are supported by the Pangeo (http://pangeo.chs.usgs.gov) scientific analysis and visualization workbench we are building on the Cloud.

B.2.6. Work Requirements and/or Work Products

B.2.6.1. Interface

The vendor will provide a curvilinear grid generation package that can be used via reproducible python notebooks or as a stand-alone tool. The tool will allow for interactive setting of corner points of the grid, as well as provide widgets along boundaries that allow flexible specification of grid focusing along the boundary.

B.2.6.2. Agile Development

The contractor will include the USGS in initial design discussion, as well as in the Alpha and Beta test phases.

B.2.6.3. Usability Testing

The contractor will provide a software version for alpha and beta testing and update the software/web interface according to modifications identified at time of alpha and beta testing.

B.2.7. Criteria for Acceptance of Product or Service

At least two members of the USGS – Woods Hole Coastal & Marine Sediment Transport group will observe AND test the new open source product. Observing and testing will occur throughout development; not only at the final stages.

B.2.8. Deliverables

The deliverable products include a) grid generation software that can run on a Pangeo JupyterHub environment (such as http://pangeo.chs.usgs.gov) or b) be hosted on a USGS website Code will be made publicly available through a GitHub repository.
