Project locations will include Pine Creek Basin Trailhead, Pit River Trailhead, and Rainbow
Obsidian Collection Site.
Project Locations
Directions to Pine Creek Basin Trailhead: from Alturas, California downtown area, take County
Road 56 approximately 13.25 miles to the intersection of National Forest System Road 42N05
(aka Forest Route 5). Heading south on Forest Route 5, approximately 10.5 miles you will come to NFSR 42N058B with a sign indicating to take a left to Pine Creek Basin Trailhead approximately 1.7 miles to the dead-end loop.
Directions to Pit River Trailhead: Head west out of Alturas, California on State Highway 299 from the four corners intersection approximately 22 miles, passing through Canby, California. Turn west (right) onto County Road 84 at Canby Bridge down a gravel road approximately 5 miles. As you travel down the County Road 84 you will come to NFSR 41N44H on your left, which will take you down the hill to the Pit River Trailhead.
Directions to Rainbow Obsidian Collection Site: From Alturas, California downtown area from the four corners intersection, take State Highway 395 east approximately 30 miles through Davis
Creek, California and take a right onto county road 47 (east towards surprise valley warner mountains) for 2 miles. At the intersection of county road 47 and national forest road 30 continue straight onto national forest road 30 for 2.5 miles and the obsidian site will be on your left at national forest road 46N59.

Testing
1) Testing will only be performed by qualified individuals who have been certified ACI Technician
Grade 1.
2) Sampling is in accordance with ASTM C172.
3) The following tests are performed on concrete used in the manufacture of toilets.
a) Air content – checked per ASTM C231 on the first batch of concrete. The air content is in the range of 5.0% +/- 1.5%.
b) Compressive strength of the cylinders – tested to ASTM C39.
i) Two (2) are tested at release (minimum strength of 2500 psi).
ii) One (1) is tested at seven (7) days (minimum strength of 4500 psi).
iii) Two (2) are tested at 28 days (minimum strength of 5000 psi).
4) A copy of all test reports shall be made available to the government upon request.
Full Installation (Option 1) Work specified under this section includes excavation, backfill and placement of precast concrete vault toilet.
1) Materials:
1. Bedding material to be sand or 3/8” minus crushed or screened aggregate.
2. Caulking between vault and toilet floor to be 1” x 1” Butyl tape designed specifically to bond precast concrete to precast concrete.
2) Location – will be provided by the government and will include:
1. Exact location by stakes or other approved method.
2. Provide clear and level site free of overhead and/or underground obstructions.
3. Provide access to the site for truck delivery and sufficient area for the crane to install and the equipment to perform the contract requirements.
3) Access to Site:
1. Delivery to site made on normal highway trucks and trailers.
2. If, at the time of delivery, conditions of access are hazardous or unsuitable for truck and equipment due to weather, physical constraints, roadway width or grade, supplier may require an alternate site with better access provided to ensure a safe and quality installation.
4) Excavation and Elevation:
1. Comply with all applicable OSHA standards for excavation.
2. Excavate for the installation of the toilet vault to a depth that will allow the structure site to be free draining after installation is completed. Allow for a 2” leveling course beneath the toilet vault. Stockpile topsoil in a separate pile at sites.
3. Finish floor elevation is 4-6” above natural grade measured at the front (entrance) of the exterior slab unless otherwise approved by the government. Ideally, the back of the building should be slightly higher to allow water to freely drain out of the toilet rooms.
The government may specify a finish floor elevation for buildings at some sites.
