The most basic requirements for SEM at the FPL are:

1. Magnification range 50x – 60,000x

1. SE and BSE electronic detectors

1. Variable pressure range

1. Variable accelerating voltages

1. Minimum sample size 50 mm x 50 mm (diameter x height)

1. Upgrading option for an Energy Dispersive Spectrometry (EDS) system

1. Must include or be easily upgradable with a Stage Navigation System.

1. Upgrading option for a 3D analytical imaging software

1. Availability of service engineers for on-site repairs and upgrades, and well-established practice for user training, troubleshooting, and technical service in Wisconsin and the USA

1. Must be robust to endure continuous operation by multiple users.
