Specifications

Cavity Stabilized Laser System

NB686070-17-02097

Background The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Fiber Sources and Applications Group is developing a testbed for an optical clock network. The network will connect distant optical timescales by two-way optical links. Each node requires an optical timescale that will be based on a highly stable cavity-stabilized laser in the initial configuration. This cavity-stabilized laser must be able to support 10 femtosecond-level timing jitter over short times.

Purpose The testbed optical clock network will include at least one clock “node” or site that is operated from a mobile laboratory (i.e. van) and not within a NIST laboratory. This mobile laboratory will require a dedicated, compact, and high performance cavity-stabilized laser with performance specifications equivalent to state-of-the-art cavity stabilized lasers to be found in future mobile optical atomic clocks.

Technical Specifications

NIST requires one cavity-stabilized laser system. The requirements of the cavity-stabilized laser system are:

Wavelength on the ITU channel grid channel 53 (195.30 THz or 1535.04 nm)

Single mode, polarization maintaining fiber-optic output

>9 mW of optical power

Allan deviation of below 6x10-15 at one second

Linear drift of < 50 kHz/day

Phase noise <-20 dBc/Hz at 10 Hz Fourier frequency and -50 dBc/Hz at 100 Hz and <-75 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz

Operation over +/- 10C around room temperature

Single easily portable unit of size approximately 6U or less

GUI or other user-friendly control and interface for establishing and monitoring the cavity lock. System should “relock” automatically. It should include diagnostics.

Delivery Delivery shall be not later than 3 months after receipt of order.(ARO)

Warranty

One year.
