About this file
This document is a specification sheet for a high-repetition rate Nd:YLF laser system for Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) issued by NASA Langley Research Center. The requirements specify a dual-cavity, diode-pumped solid-state laser system for flow physics research, with precise technical specifications including a 527 nm beam output, pulse repetition rate up to 10 kHz, minimum 30 millijoules output energy per laser head, 5 mm or less beam diameter, and 150 nanosecond pulse width. Additional requirements include internal beam combining optics, electronic safety shutter, external clock synchronization, single-phase 120 VAC power operation, and a cooling system.
The solicitation is identified as a sole source requirement (Number 80NSSC25913037Q) for the NASA Langley Research Center's Flow Physics and Control Branch, intended for wind tunnel and laboratory experiments investigating complex flow phenomena. The vendor is required to provide technical literature to enable government evaluation of submitted quotes, with the document emphasizing the technical merit of the proposed laser system for PIV applications.

Specifications for High Repetition Rate Nd-YLF Laser System for Particle Image Velocimetry
NASA Langley Research Center requires one Nd:YLF dual-cavity, diode-pumped, solid state, high repetition rate laser system for flow physics research. This laser system will be part of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) system used by the Flow Physics and Control Branch in wind tunnel and laboratory experiments to investigate and analyze complex flow phenomena.
The laser shall have the following characteristics:
- Shall have dual laser head (cavity) for double pulse PIV operation.
- Shall output 527 nm beam only.
- Shall have a pulse repetition rate per laser head of up to 10 kHz.
- Shall have a minimum output energy 30 milljoules at 527 nm wavelength per laser head.
- Shall have a beam diameter of 5 mm or less.
- Shall have a beam divergence of 8.5 mrad or less.
- Shall have a pulse width of 150 nanoseconds
- Shall include internal laser beam combining and alignment optics for PIV applications.
- Shall include an electronic laser safety shutter or switch device.
- Each laser head shall accept external clock timing and trigger inputs to synchronize with a TTL level pulse.
- Shall operate by single phase, 120 VAC @ 60 Hz.
- Shall include a cooling system such as a chiller.
- Shall operate at minimum pulse separation of 1 microsec or less for PIV operation.
**The vendor shall provide technical literature in order for the Government to evaluate the quotes submitted based on technical merit.
