About this file

This Statement of Work (SOW) details NASA's requirement for a fluidized bed particle generator (seeder) to support lunar and Martian space exploration research. The specific device is the TSI Fluidized Bed Aerosol Generator 3400A or equivalent, which must generate particles between 0.5 to 40 microns for optical particle sizing methods. NASA Langley Research Center will use the device to study plume surface interaction and ejecta through the Stereo Cameras for Lunar Plume Surface Studies (SCALPSS) photogrammetry system.

Key technical specifications include: output concentration range of 10-100 mg/m³, powder feed rate of 3-30 mm³/min, carrier gas flow rate of 5-15 liters/min, 115 VAC power requirement, and compact dimensions not exceeding 12" x 24" x 7". The system requires a 12-month warranty and must be capable of deagglomerating and aerosolizing dry particles in a laboratory environment. Delivery is specified as 6 weeks after order receipt, with the system to be built by TSI Inc. and shipped directly to NASA Langley Research Center.

STATEMENT OF WORK

1. Objective/Requirements NASA requires procurement and delivery of a fluidized bed particle generator (seeder) to aerosolize particles ranging from 0.5 to 40 microns to allow development of optical particle sizing methods for lunar and Martian space exploration. The seeder shall allow dry particles to be deagglomerated and aerosolized in a laboratory environment. The seeder shall be TSI Fluidized Bed Aerosol Generator 3400A or equivalent,

2. Characteristics, Scope, and Specs NASA Langley is studying plume surface interaction (PSI) and the resulting ejecta both in ground tests and in flight with a so-called Stereo Cameras for Lunar Plume Surface Studies (SCALPSS) photogrammetry system. SCALPSS can measure the ejecta by itself or in combination with lasers. NASA needs a source of known-sized particles lofted in laboratory air to develop a SCALPSS-like particle sizing and particle concentration measurement system.

The particle generator shall have the following specifications:

o Output Concentration Range shall include 10 to 100 mg/m^3 or wider.

o Powder Feed Rate Range shall include 3 to 30 mm^3 / min (equates to a feed rate of 180 to 1800 mg/hour, assuming unit density) or wider, and shall be adjustable o Carrier Gas Flow Rate Range shall be 5 to 15 liters/min at 345 kPa (50 psi) or wider.

Pressures higher than 100 psi shall not be required so that “shop air” can be utilized.

o Particle Size Range shall be at least between 0.5 micron and 40 micron and particles in this range shall be deagglomerated and lofted through the outlet.

o Power Requirements shall operate on 115 VAC; 60 Hz to meet power available in the laboratory; and not exceeding 100 W.

o Dimensions (LWH) with elutriator not to exceed 12” x 24” x 7” to minimize lab space requirements.

o The system shall be warrantied for at least 12 months.

3. Place of Performance The system will be built by TSI Inc and shipped to NASA Langley Research Center, where it will be used in a suitable laboratory.

4. Period of Performance Delivery date by 6 weeks after receipt of order.
