About this file
This Statement of Work (SOW) details NASA Goddard Space Flight Center's Multifunctional Nanosensor Platform (MNP) project for lunar volatile detection. Dr. Farrell from Space Science Institute will support the project by developing and customizing sublimation/desorption and outgassing models for high-latitude lunar case studies, with specific focus on understanding the near-polar landing environment's plasma, dust, volatile, and electrical characteristics.
The contract has a 36-month performance period spanning from 7/15/2025 to 7/14/2028, broken into a base year and two option years. Key milestones include customizing the sublimation/desorption model for CLPS-MNP (12 months), applying the model to the project (12 months), participating in biweekly teleconferences, and providing consultation on requirements and testing as needed. The work will be performed at Space Science Institute in Boulder, Colorado, and aims to feed comprehensive volatile model data for lunar mission interpretation.

STATEMENT OF WORK
1. Objective/Requirements NASA GSFC has been awarded a CLPS-instrument project called Multifunctional Nanosensor Platform (MNP) (PI: Mahmooda Sultana). Under that program, NASA GSFC is developing an instrument for detecting volatiles and a comprehensive volatile model to interpret the measurements made on the Moon. The objective of this work is to develop and CLPS mission to feed into the comprehensive volatile model for data interpretation.
2. Characteristics, Scope, and Specs
Dr. Farrell at SSI will support the development of instrument requirements and act as a consultant on instrument testing. This support includes running his unique sublimation/desorption and outgassing models (published in Farrell et al., 2022) for high latitude case studies consistent with the instrument landing location on the Moon. These studies will assist in determining polar roving location. He will also model the water outgassing from the rover that may act as a contaminating source that may interfere with instrument objectives. In addition, he will act as a consultant on the expected plasma, dust, volatile, and electrical environment at the near-polar landing location and assist the team in understating how that environment might impact MNP.
Specific milestones will include:
Customize the sublimation/desorption model for CLPS-MNP (12 months)
Apply the model to CLPS-MNP (12 months)
Participate in biweekly telecons (36 months after award)
Consultation on requirements and testing (as needed over the 36 months after award)
3. Place of Performance
Space Science Institute, 4765 Walnut Street, Suite B, Boulder, CO 80301
4. Period of Performance The work will start upon award and will be performed over the following 36 months.
Base year: 7/15/2025 7/14/2026 Option year 1: 7/15/2025 7/14/2027 Option year 2: 7/15/2027 7/14/2028
