About this file
This document is a Brand Name Justification form from NASA Shared Services Center recommending a sole source procurement for a Denios Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Cabinet. The document details the unique safety features of the cabinet, including built-in fire suppression systems, temperature monitoring, explosion relief technology, and containment measures specifically designed for high-capacity lithium-ion battery storage. NASA's market research determined that Denios is one of the few suppliers offering a complete solution meeting critical UL and NFPA safety compliance standards. The estimated delivery time is 4 weeks AOR, with the procurement justified by the potential safety risks and compliance issues that could arise from using alternative vendor solutions. The document is dated 3/31/2025 and supports solicitation number 80NSSC25900981Q for a Lithium-Polymer Battery Storage Cabinet.

Brand Name Justification:
☒I recommend that NASA, NASA Shared Services Center negotiate with only with vendors who can provide the subject band name from Denios for Li-Ion Battery Safety Cabinet. The total estimated cost of this effort is and the estimated period of performance or lead-time for delivery is 4 weeks AOR.
This recommendation is for the acquisition of supplies or services determined to be reasonably available from only one source/only one manufacture. Competition is impractical for the following reasons (please answer the questions below):
1. What are the reasons for soliciting only the suggested source/suggested brand name? Please provide the unique characteristics of the items or services along with the supporting rationale and the market research performed to substantiate your reason for the suggested source/brand name.
The Denios Lithium-Ion Battery Safety Cabinet is being recommended as a sole source due to its unique safety features specifically engineered for the storage of high-capacity, high energy-density lithium-ion batteries. This cabinet includes built-in fire suppression systems, temperature monitoring, explosion relief technology, and containment measures, all of which are designed to mitigate the risks associated with thermal runaway, fire, or explosion of lithium-ion battery cells. Market research was conducted to identify comparable battery storage cabinets, but alternative products either lacked critical UL or NFPA compliance or did not provide an integrated, certified system with the same level of tested safety performance. Denios is a recognized leader in hazardous material storage systems and is one of the few suppliers offering a complete solution that meets all relevant fire safety and industrial storage standards.
2. What is the impact to the government if another vendor/brand was used? Include any dollar, schedule, or compatibility impacts if possible.
Use of an alternative vendor could result in significant safety risks, compliance issues, or delays. Cabinets that lack third-party tested fire suppression, explosion protection, and thermal insulation may not provide adequate protection in the event of battery failure. This could compromise facility and personnel safety, potentially leading to equipment loss, fire damage, or mission disruption. Additionally, if an alternative cabinet does not meet NASA’s stringent safety and performance requirements, further evaluation, testing, or retrofitting would be needed, resulting in increased costs and delays. Selecting Denios mitigates these risks and ensures immediate readiness and regulatory compliance.
