About this file
This Statement of Work outlines requirements for the AVUELO Campaign, a collaboration between NASA Earth Science programs and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) to collect and analyze vegetation data in Panama. The Lab will provide ground-based instrumentation operation, trait estimation, and data processing support from February-March 2025.
The specific requirements include operating two Spectral Evolution PSR+ spectroradiometers to measure 1,000 taxonomically identified foliar samples, processing fresh and dried leaf spectra using ASD FieldSpec spectroradiometer, and analyzing over 20 vegetation functional traits. Key deliverables include: sample collection planning by January 15, 2025; fresh spectra collection February 1-28, 2025; data processing within 90 days of collection; dry spectra measurements within 120 days of receiving samples; and delivery of AVIRIS-3 L2+ normalized reflectance data to ORNL DAAC within 120 days of JPL's release of final L2 surface reflectance data. All spectral measurements and trait estimates will be uploaded to the ORNL-DAAC managed data portal (ecosis.org).

STATEMENT OF WORK
Operation of ground-based instrumentation, trait estimation and data processing in support of the AVUELO Campaign
The Lab will provide support for operation of ground-based instrumentation, trait estimation and data processing in support of the AVUELO Campaign, including planning, deployment, setup, operations, and timely data delivery
Background AVUELO is collaboration between several NASA Earth Science programs, including Carbon Cycle Science and Terrestrial Ecology, as well as the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI). AVUELO entails airborne imaging spectroscopy acquisitions from AVIRIS-3 over tropical forests, coastal areas and volcanoes, see https://striresearch.si.edu/quantitative-forest-ecology/avuelo/. For terrestrial vegetation applications, a key objective of AVUELO is to reduce the current gaps in the development of models to retrieve vegetation functional traits from imaging spectroscopy. As such, AVUELO plans to collect and analyze approximately 1,000 taxonomically identified foliar samples for functional trait analysis, along with leaf spectra and other ecological and botanical information. These data will later be linked to spectra from imaging data for NASA to further prototype algorithms for current and upcoming missions. The samples will be collected in Panama over a 4-week period in February-March, 2025. To support this activity, STRI is collecting the samples that will be used for AVUELO, but each fresh foliage sample must be measured using a portable spectrometer, and following drying and grinding, dried samples will need to be measured using spectroscopy to estimate a suite of >20 traits. As well, the AVIRIS-3 surface reflectance imagery will need to be processed through a standardized workflow to correct for topographic, bi-directional reflectance (BRDF) and glint eects.
Scope To support AVUELO, the field team will collect the fresh leaf spectra from foliage samples in situ using Spectral Evolution PSR+ portable spectroradiometers, and will further collect the dry foliar sample spectra using an ASD FieldSpec spectroradiometer. All fresh and dry foliage spectral data will be QA/QC reviewed and processed to correct for between-detector jumps. The measurements will be processed using existing calibration equations for foliar functional traits and all spectral measurements and trait estimates will be delivered to the ORNL-DAAC managed data portal https://ecosis.org. Dried foliage samples will be prepared and stored for future chemical analyses, should these later be requested.
In addition, the team will process the AVIRIS-3 imagery through their established processing pipeline and deliver the topo-BRDF-glint normalized imagery to the AVUELO team and ORNL-DAAC for broader dissemination.
Requirements The team will operate two Spectral Evolution PSR+ (400-2500 nm) portable spectroradiometers at STRI during the AVUELO campaign and will measure all foliage samples collected in support of AVUELO. Data processing will consist of correcting raw spectral data, estimating traits and their uncertainties from the fresh spectra, and delivering the spectral and estimated trait data to Ecosis. Dried samples will be shipped to the laboratory and measured using the ASD laboratory spectroradiometer (400-2500 nm), which will be processed to estimate concentrations of an additional set of traits and their uncertainties. The dry spectra and trait estimates will be uploaded to Ecosis. AVIRIS-3 imagery will be processed through the open-source HyTools routines to normalize L2 (atmospherically corrected) AVIRIS-3 data to L2+ normalized imagery with corrections for topography, BRDF and glint.
Deliverables / Delivery Schedule Foliage sample collection planning, including necessary permit: Completed by January 15, Fresh spectra: Sample collection February 1-February 28, 2025 in Panama, completed by
