About this file

This Statement of Work (SOW) outlines NASA's requirements for Moonprint Solutions to develop and optimize custom coated textile solutions for the Artemis Suit Materials Project, specifically focused on the outer shell fabric of lunar suit environmental protection garments (EPG). The project has a 6-month period of performance from January 15-July 15, 2025, with no travel expenses required.

The key requirements include conducting coating and lamination trials using COTS or custom formulation coatings (including Ultra Everdry, Nasiol Omniphob/T-Plus, Cerakote, and PTFE/ETFE films), pursuing additives for various properties, and optimizing coatings/laminations to meet specific goals such as dust impermeability, reduced porosity, UV blocking, and thermal stability between 50K to 394K. Deliverables include up to three candidate solutions with 5 yards each of coated/laminated fabrics, weekly status meetings, and a comprehensive final report detailing design processes, test results, manufacturing considerations, and PFAS-alternative recommendations. The work requires close collaboration with NASA's Crew and Thermal System Division Advanced Suit Team to ensure iterative feedback and alignment with NASA's testing schedule.

Statement of Work (SOW) for Moonprint Solutions

Project Title: Development and Optimization of Custom Coated Textile Solutions for Artemis Suit Materials Project

Background: The overarching goal of the NASA’s Artemis Suit Material Project conducted by the Crew and Thermal System Division Advanced Suit Team, is to develop enabling technologies and potentially a turnkey solution for suit vendors for the outer shell fabric of a lunar suit environmental protection garment (EPG). The project asserts that no existing fabric currently meets all requirements necessitating the construction of a bespoke solution designed to withstand the harsh conditions of the lunar environment.

One of the most challenging aspect of this project is the development and optimization of fabric coatings and laminations which meet project requirements for dust penetration, optics, and UV and temperature resistance.

Objective:

Moonprint Solutions will collaborate with NASA to develop custom coating and/or lamination solutions to meet the requirements of the Advanced Suit Materials project.

Period of Performance: 6 months after ATP. (e.g. January 15-July 15, 2025) The work will proceed over a defined schedule to ensure iterative feedback and final sample delivery within the required timeframe. Sample deliveries and iterations will align with NASA’s testing schedule to ensure timely feedback on each enhancement area.

Travel: No travel expenses are required/included.

Requirements:

1. Moonprint shall conduct coating and lamination trials of COTS or custom formulation coatings or films to fabric substrates as directed by NASA, including but limited to: Ultra Everdry, Nasiol Omniphob/T-Plus, Cerakote, and PTFE/ETFE film lamination trials.

2. Moonprint shall pursue additives for pigmentation, improved viscosity, adhesion, electrostatic discharge (ESD), and flammability.

3. Moonprint shall pursue overall coating/lamination optimization with the following goals:

a. Impermeable to dust and reduced dust adhesion

b. Decrease porosity and control surface roughness

c. Addition of inorganic particles for flame retardance/UV blocking/optical/ESD

d. No delamination/embrittlement when flexed at ambient or cryo conditions

e. No coefficient of thermal expansion mismatch within operating temperature range of 50K to 394K.

f. Minimal impact (<10%) to fabric weight and thickness

g. Maintain low stiffness at ambient and cryo conditions

4. Moonprint shall inform and guide coating/lamination solution space in collaboration with NASA to deliver up to three [QTY 3] candidate solutions that best meet project requirements.

5. Moonprint shall complete and coordinate testing as required to meet stated goals.

Deliverables:

1. Sample Production and Final Product Delivery A. Interim samples, as required.

B. 5 yards each of up to three [QTY 3] coated/laminated fabrics, optimized in pursuit of stated goals

2. Meetings:

A. Kick-off. To be held within 1 week of ATP.

B. Weekly status updates. To be held weekly during the Period of Performance.

C. Closeout meetings

3. Final Report A. Shall include design and manufacturing processes followed B. Shall include results of testing.

C. Shall include itemized list of elements and quantities utilized in final deliverables.

D. Shall include lessons learned and recommendation of future work.

E. Shall include suggestions for upscale of manufacturing/supply chain considerations F. Shall make PFAS-alternative recommendations, as applicable
