About this file
This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for an analytical microbalance to be used in experiments supporting the development of more efficient and safer uranium nuclear fuels for space exploration missions.
The SOW indicates that the analytical microbalance will be used to weigh 1 to 5 mg depleted uranium powder samples for thermodynamic property measurements in a high temperature reaction calorimeter. The experiments will support the Space Nuclear Propulsion Project and Fission Surface Power Project under the Space Technology Mission Directorate. The place of performance is the Glenn Research Center, and the period of performance/delivery date is 09/10/2024.
The related federal contract opportunity is a Request for Quote (RFQ) with Solicitation Number 80NSSC24879358Q, issued by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Shared Services Center, a civilian agency. The RFQ and SOW are attached.

Statement of Work Analytical Microbalance
Gustavo Costa, 7/30/2024
The analytical microbalance will be used to weight 1 to 5 mg depleted uranium powder samples for their thermodynamic property measurements in a high temperature reaction calorimeter. In a typical experiment, uranium-based powder samples are weighted in an analytical microbalance and pressed in a form of pellets. Following weighting and conformation of powder samples into pellets, the samples are transferred to a sealed container for the calorimetric experiments. The experiments in the calorimeter will support the development of more efficient and safer uranium nuclear fuels for nuclear rockets and power generation for deep in-space exploration missions (e.g. Artemis and Mars). This work is supported by Space Nuclear Propulsion Project and Fission Surface Power Project under the Space Technology Mission Directorate.
