About this file

This statement of work describes requirements for modifying and characterizing a breadboard system to support materials science research on rapid melt and solidification of alloys under microgravity conditions. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration Marshall Space Flight Center seeks a vendor to integrate a diode laser, sample container, and monitoring equipment onto an existing breadboard system. Tasks include performing ground-based melt and solidification experiments with the laser and monitoring equipment, conducting thermal analysis to support system modifications, and characterizing the breadboard's temperature control, sample translation, and imaging capabilities. The period of performance is six months from authorization to proceed. Deliverables include monthly status reports via meetings and written memos documenting project phases. The solicitation seeks these capabilities to support the stated opportunity to develop a microgravity laser diode melting experiment.

Statement of Work (TMI Diode Laser Module)

The MSFC EM32 Materials Science and Metallurgy Branch, is seeking a vendor to modify, integrate, and characterize a breadboard system and eventually an ISS hosted module supporting the materials science of rapid melt and cooldown of alloys of interest to In-space manufacturing i.e. under microgravity. The system to be integrated includes a samples container of the to-be-melted and rapidly cooled down samples, a Diode Laser for melting such samples, and temperature and power monitoring. The focus here is on microgravity and environment effects of solidification of complex alloys planned for In-space manufacturing rather than in-depth solidification issues.

The scope of this work is to further include support of design and development activities pertinent to custom instrumentation, specialized jigs and fixtures pursuant to the delivery of the required breadboard capabilities.

The task involves the maturation, integration and characterization of an existing breadboard system supporting science and in-space manufacturing relevant development testing for low temperature complex alloy solidification systems, i.e. beyond binary. Light fabrication and assembly may be necessary. Tasks will include:

• Perform ground-side melt and solidification of alloys of interest by laser, with temperature and power monitoring, via the microgravity ‘flight article‘ design.

• Perform thermal design and analysis necessary to support modification and reconfiguration of breadboard system to support testing of low temperature alloys systems of interest.

• Perform characterization of breadboard system including temperature control, sample translation and image acquisition.

Other Requirements:

The task’s base-period activities described herein require a senior-level engineer with one or more advanced degrees and at least 25 years’ experience entailing mechanical and systems design, thermal analysis in addition to elevated temperature sample processing and containment systems design/analysis for molten materials handling. Additional personnel may be assigned/involved in the capacity of subject matter experts, as warranted by specific milestone requirements.

Access to Redstone Arsenal and MSFC is required to support selected technical and programmatic meetings where Videocon is not sufficient, to access the breadboard system and to utilize existing MSFC facilities when required.

Deliverables and Milestone Dates:

• Monthly status reports via in-person and/or virtual online meetings. These meetings will include discussion for rapid mods as well as generate unofficial status reports which will include problem statements, technical approaches, assumptions, findings, and conclusions relevant to each task.

• Memos documenting completion and progress of each phase of the project inclusive of emails, TEAMS meetings, BOX uploads.

Period of Performance (POP):

The POP for this effort is 6 months from Authorization to Proceed (ATP).
