Wave Sensors

1.0 General

The Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO) requires eight (8) small low power directional wave sensors that will be integrated into buoys. Modern wave sensors generally require a small footprint and utilize MEMS sensors to account for 3-D motion, rotation and compass heading in all dimensions to cover nine degrees of freedom. Sensor will be furnished as an OEM level as a PCB.

1.1 Base Requirement

Type Description Quantity 1 Wave Sensor 8

2.0 Required Salient Characteristics of Wave Sensor

2.1 Sensor shall be provided as Printed Circuit Board (PCB) with mounting holes and include all accessories needed for the operation of the unit such as communication cables, data cards and power cables.

2.2 Sensor shall include any calibration accessories required to calibrate the system

2.3 System shall provide a method to calibrate and verify compass accuracy

2.4 System shall utilize MEMS sensors to account for 3-D motion, rotation and compass heading in all dimensions to cover nine degrees of freedom

2.5 Sensor shall utilize on-board temperature compensation.

2.6 Sensor shall include on-board data logger capable of logging at least 7 days of wave data

2.7 A real-time RS-232 or RS-485 interface shall be provided to allow configuration of the sensing rate and output format. Interface shall also provide real-time reports of heading, wave height, wave period and wave directing. The communications protocol for this interface shall be provided.

2.8 System shall provide an interface port RS-232 or RS-485 with adjustable baud rate from 2.4-115.2 kbps

2.9 Sampling rate shall be configurable up to 8 Hz

2.10 Vendor shall support and provide a method to modify transfer function for the buoy type utilized with the system

2.11 System shall provide the following output formats:

2.11.1 First-5 Fourier wave coefficients shall be provided as outputs

2.11.2 Maximum wave height (Hmax) shall be provided as output

2.11.3 Wave period at Hmax shall be provided as output

2.11.4 Wave energy shall be provided as output

2.11.5 Spectrum (raw or processed) shall be provided as output

2.11.6 Heading in degrees shall be provided as output

2.12 System shall meet or exceed the following accuracy metrics:

2.12.1 Hs: ±0.5cm, Range: 0.2 - 20m, Resolution 0.001m

2.12.2 Period <1% , Range: 1.5 – 20 sec., Resolution 0.001sec

2.12.3 Wave Direction ±4º, Range: 0-360º, Resolution 0.001º

2.13 Dimensions not to exceed:

2.13.1 53.5mm length X 68mm width X 23mm height (w/connector)

2.13.2 Max weight of bare PCB board: 0.8oz

2.14 Power Requirements:

2.14.1 Less than 160mW at 12VDC

2.14.2 Input Voltage Range: 5-30VDC

2.15 Operating Temperature:

2.15.1 Operating: -30C to 80C

2.15.2 Storage: -40C to 85C

2.16 Potential commercially-available sensors meeting these specifications are, but not limited to, Aanderaa

MOTUS Wave Sensor 5729, TRIAXYS Directional Wave Buoy, and SeaView Systems SVS-603 Wave Sensor.

3.0 Submission Requirements

Vendors shall submit the following documents when providing quotes for the contract.

3.1 Datasheet for Wave Sensor that includes specification information for all salient characteristics

3.2 Communications protocol document

3.3 User manual for Wave Sensor

3.4 Price list for software license maintenance for any required software for the sensor

3.5 Analysis report, study or published paper of Wave Sensor versus National Data Buoy Center wave buoy.

4.0 Inspection and Acceptance:

4.1 The COR shall inspect the equipment upon delivery and provide a punch list of any and all missing or damaged products.

4.2 Contractor shall provide dates of completion of punch list items and replacement parts and/or short ship items from the manufacturer(s).
