About this file

This document is a Question and Answer (Q&A) file related to a drinking water sampling project involving Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). The file addresses various logistical details about sampling schedules, site access, and sampling requirements. Key parameters include sampling being restricted to normal business hours (7am-5pm), specific requirements for coliform testing (positive/negative results), and flexibility in scheduling as long as monthly deadlines are met. The document indicates that emergency sampling must be performed immediately, and seasonal facility samples must be completed separately.

The Q&A document provides critical operational guidance for the sampling project, including specifications that pre-opening coliform samples must be taken a minimum of 24 hours apart, MDOT will clarify sampling tap locations, and the consultant must follow the Drinking Water Sampling and Analysis LSS document. While the file does not detail specific pricing or funding sources, it offers comprehensive procedural guidance for executing the water sampling project, emphasizing adherence to established timelines and methodological requirements.

Text version

1. Can the sampling schedule be structured so that access to sites designated for monthly, quarterly, and lagoon sampling will be coordinated within a consistent, limited timeframe (e.g., consecutive days), rather than spread across multiple non-consecutive dates? Or are there limiting factors where certain sites are only available on specific days within the month, quarter, etc.? As long as deadlines are met there can be some schedule flexibility, but it is important that all deadlines are met.

1. Can sampling be conducted outside of the 7am–5pm timeframe (including early mornings or evenings) if coordinated in advance, to accommodate site conditions or laboratory holding times? No, samples must be taken during normal business hours due to rest area attendant time schedule.

1. Will the State coordinate access to seasonal facilities so pre-opening and closing samples can be scheduled alongside other required sampling, or must they be performed as separate site visits? These tasks must be completed separately

1. If repeat or emergency sampling is required, will MDOT provide flexibility to align those with already scheduled site visits when possible, or are they expected to be performed immediately? If emergency sampling is required it is expected to be done immediately.

1. Can you clarify if the seasonal pre-opening coliform sample need to be sampled on sequential days (24 hours apart) or if they can be collected multiple days apart (i.e. the following week)? Pre opening samples must be taken at a minimum 24 hours apart. Yes, they can be taken multiple days apart.

1. Can you clarify if the coliform sample needs to be positive/negative, or quantitative? Positive/ negative.

1. Will someone from MDOT be able to describe or show where the well sample taps are located, and will they need access from MDOT? Yes, MDOT will clarify locations.

1. Does the consultant need to provide a sampling schedule to MDOT, or can the sampling be conducted as time and schedule allow for the consultant? See Drinking Water Sampling and Analysis LSS document. As long as the requirements and monthly deadlines are met as described sampling can be done as time and schedule allow.
