About this file
This document outlines purchase requirements for modified shipping containers. The Department of Homeland Security US Coast Guard is seeking proposals to provide eight standard 10-foot steel shipping containers modified to securely store and transport three Caterpillar D398-TA and five Caterpillar D348-TA diesel engines. The container modifications must include a method to secure the engine foundations to the container floor and walls to prevent movement during shipping and allow installation and removal via forklift. The preferred design would accommodate both engine models but separate designs are acceptable. The engines range from 8,500 to 14,700 pounds and specifications are provided including foundation details.

PURCHASE REQUIREMENTS
Vendor to provide (8) standard 10’ new steel shipping containers (CONEX Boxes) modified to customer needs.
The shipping containers will be used to store and ship (3) Caterpillar D398-TA and (5) Caterpillar D348-TA diesel engines. Vendor designed and provided container modifications include a method to secure the engine foundation to the floor of the shipping container. Securing method shall be adequate to prevent engine movement during shipping. Secondary securing points to the container walls or overhead are acceptable.
The preferred design of the container modifications would allow either model engine to be stored and shipped in the container. However, this is not a requirement, separate designs are acceptable.
The container modifications need to allow the engines to be installed and removed using a forklift.
Engine details:
Caterpillar D398-TA Approximate weight 14,700 pounds Approximate height 82.7 inches Approximate width 76 inches Maximum length 100 inches Foundation description: (2) lengths of steel channel, 10” tall x 4” wide x 90 long. The channels are spaced 30 ½” apart, see photos:
Caterpillar D348-TA Approximate weight 8,500 pounds Approximate height 80 inches Approximate width 61 inches Maximum length 85 inches Foundation Details: The D348 engine is normally mounted to a 10” steel channel like the D398 engine. However, when the engine is removed from the ship the steel channel stays in the ship because it also supports the AC generator. (2) lengths of 10” high x 4” wide x 70” long sections of steel channel would be required to mount the D348 engine in a similar manner as the D398 engine. Note: The steel channels could also be 83 1/2 “if matching the D348 engine and D398 engine mounting design is desired. The steel channel would require several inches of blocking to allow a forklift to reach under. Note: The attached D348 drawing shows angled steel, our configuration uses steel channel. See photo of a partial D348 engine minus the steel channel, resting on dunnage.
