Version 11-30-2016-1 FAR Part 11—Describing Agency Needs

PURCHASE DESCRIPTION

1. Statement of Need and Purpose:

The purpose of this requirement is to replace an iXon3 camera purchased eight (8) years ago which is no longer functioning optimally and is at the end of its term of use.

The iXON Life EMCCD camera will be a considerable update in functionality and enable the laboratory to produce better results. This requirement will also include Smart Shutter components, to improve the signal quality in the experiments and for automated opening and closing of a light path on a microscope.

2. Background Information and Objective:

The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), Synaptic Transmission Section (STS) laboratory is working on endocytosis. Synaptic vesicle endocytosis retrieves fused vesicles from the plasma membrane to sustain synaptic transmission, which is essential for cell functioning. The STS laboratory is conducting research on endocytosis by live imaging, electron microscopy, western blot, and molecular biology, and involving several genes.
