Version 11-30-2016-1 FAR Part 11—Describing Agency Needs

PURCHASE DESCRIPTION

1. Statement of Need and Purpose: The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), Unit on the Neurobiology of Affective Memory (UNAM) and the NIAAA Laboratory on the Neurobiology of Compulsive Behaviors (LNCB) require the acquisition of more ready to use (turnkey) fiber photometry (FP) systems to complement their current Tucker Davis Technologies (TDT) systems. Projects being pursued by the UNAM and NIAAA requires the acquisition of more ready to use (turnkey) fiber photometry (FP) systems to complement their current FP systems. The UNAM and LNCB labs have utilized preexisting Tucker Davis Technolgies (TDT) fiber photometry systems within the NIMH and the NIAAA. The needed systems meet all the criteria for the laboratories and are solely obtainable from TDT. Large ongoing data subsets, and experiments have been obtained and are ongoing via the existing TDT FP system. Due to the two 2 laboratories growing reliance on fiber photometry in their standard experimental paradigms they need to acquire two (2) more TDT FP systems.

2. Background Information and Objective: Current approaches to investigations of brain circuits and systems require detailed analyses of neuronal circuit dynamics at a cellular or greater resolution across multiple brain regions. Fiber photometry is a neural imaging technique used to monitor neural activity of specifically targeted cell populations. Fiber photometry uses excitation light from implanted fiber optics to record fluorescent activity of genetically encoded calcium indicators in neuronal populations that fluoresce in the presence of calcium and or chlorine. This imagining can be uniquely used while behavioral or electrophysiology experiments are being conducted giving a better understanding of the underpinning of brain function and its role in animal behavior in free roaming animals. The systems needed by UNAM and LNCB are solely obtainable via Tucker Davis Technologies. Due to the UNAM and LCNB growing integration of fiber photometry into their standard experimental paradigms their current systems are overtaxed and leading to shortfalls in productivity. The systems must match the existing Tucker Davis Technologies fiber photometry systems due to data sets already obtained and for scientific continuity and reproducibility of existing and future experiments.
