About this file

This purchase description outlines requirements for upgrading existing microscopy equipment at the National Institute on Aging's Confocal Imaging Facility. The agency seeks to add confocal and STED nanoscope imaging capabilities with 30nm resolution by procuring a microscope compatible with its existing Visitech VT-iSIM. Required capabilities include aligned-by-design pulsed 775nm STED and confocal functionality with STEADYFOCUS autofocus that can mount to an inverted Nikon or Zeiss base. The related federal contract opportunity is solicitation number 75N95023Q00255 from the Department of Health and Human Services' National Institutes of Health's National Institute on Drug Abuse to upgrade microscopy equipment.

Version 11-30-2016-1 FAR Part 11—Describing Agency Needs

PURCHASE DESCRIPTION

1. Statement of Need and Purpose: The purpose of this acquisition is to upgrade and enhance the imaging capabilities of existing microscopy equipment located in the Confocal Imaging Facility (CIF) within the National Institute on Aging, by upgrading existing microscopy equipment to a confocal microscope and STED nanoscope with a resolution down to 30nm. The need is to add Confocal and STED (Stimulated Emission Depletion) imaging capabilities to the existing microscopy equipment.

2. Background Information and Objective: the ability to upgrade existing epifluorescence microscopes to both confocal and multicolor STED (Stimulated Emission Depletion).

3. Generic Name of Product: Nanoscope

4. Purchase Description: A microscope with hardware and softwre that is compatible with existing microscopy equipment in the CIF and will integrate with the existing Visitech VT-iSIM.

5. Salient characteristics: Ability to provide aligned-by-design, pulsed 775nm STED and confocal add-on with STED-compatible autofocus (STEADYFOCUS) that can be mounted on an inverted Nikon or Zeiss inverted microscope base.

EasySTED phase plate. Footprint of <0.2m² is required for compatibility with existing system. Alignment of microscope body can be performed via software. No additional optics in the imaging beam path to ensure 100% free of fluorescence losses or imaging distortions. Web-based software in the unit that can be controlled by Google Chrome or Firefox and is compatible with all platforms, such as PC, Mac, or Android, including smartphones and tablets.

Excellent stability required, so that all lasers, excitation and STED, are aligned by design, such as provided by the EasySTED phase plate, which shapes the laser beams depending on their wavelength. All lasers travel through the same optical fiber and are not separated afterwards.

To assure compatibility with existing system a small Footprint of <0.2m² is required. Alignment of microscope body can be performed via software. No additional optics in the existing imaging beam path to ensure a signal that is 100% free of fluorescence losses or imaging distortions. Web-based software in the unit that can be controlled by Google Chrome or Firefox and is compatible with all platforms, such as PC, Mac, or Android, including smartphones and tablets.
