WSR-88D NEXRAD Standards/MILSPEC Subscription
STATEMENT OF WORK
PR#NWWG1300-16-01092
1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
The National Weather Service (NWS) Radar Operation Center (ROC) NEXRAD Program is comprised of up to 160 WSR-88D Doppler radars located within the United States and overseas. This program is supported by a Tri-agency consisting of the DOC, DOD, and DOT. The NWS provides overall configuration management of the NEXRAD program that encompasses system spec drawings, specification documentation, parts procurement, removal, replacement, and stock listing of WSR-88D equipment.
1.2 Discussion
A CD-351 safety complaint was submitted related to fall protection for removal of the Dual Pol ladder bars and Dual Pol repair and maintenance. In response to that complaint, the Radar Operations Center examined several options. Modification to the pedestal was considered but not pursued due to the amount of time and further analysis that would be required for selection and implementation. Man lifts were considered but are not pursued after testing and analysis because of radome hatch dimensions, the weight of man lifts and lack of storage area in the radome. The safest and most reasonable method to provide another Dual Pol maintenance tool is the purchase sturdy scaffolding. ROC investigated the equipment that is in use at several sites and previously used for depot work to prepare for acquisition.
