STATEMENT OF NEED:
Airborne Carbon Monoxide Analyzer
PURPOSE:
The NOAA ESRL Chemical Sciences Division (CSD) requires a carbon monoxide (CO) analyzer to support our airborne trace gas measurement program. The requested CO analyzer will replace an obsolete custom-built analyzer that has been removed from operation. A high quality CO measurement is essential to the scientific work performed by our research group.
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS:
The CO Analyzer must have 1-second precision of ±0.1 ppb or better at a data rate of 1 Hz or better under conditions relevant to airborne deployment aboard research aircraft (e.g. subject to vibration and shock, varying cabin temperatures between 10-45°C, and power transients). The analyzer should come “ready to use” with all vacuum pumps and electronics necessary to operate under the stated conditions. The analyzer should have standard RS-232 and Ethernet outputs to facilitate networking with other aircraft instrumentation.
Additional consideration will be given to CO analyzers based on the following criteria:
· Capability of measuring atmospheric species in addition to CO, especially water vapor with 1-second precision of ±100 ppm or better at a data rate of 1 Hz or better
· History of successful deployment aboard research aircraft
· Ease of integration and operation aboard the NOAA P-3 aircraft
Three companies offering flight-proven CO analyzers were considered in our market research: Picarro (Santa Clara, CA), Aerodyne Research (Billerica, MA), and netMercury/ABB/Los Gatos Research (Mesa, AZ / San Jose, CA). The Picarro analyzer does not meet the required technical specifications for CO precision. Both the Aerodyne Research and ABB/Los Gatos Research analyzers meet the required CO precision and data rate specifications, and both offer water vapor measurements. The ABB/Los Gatos Research analyzer offers improved precision and thermal stability compared to the Aerodyne Research Analyzer. Decision will be based on best value to government for analyzers meeting the technical specifications and after taking into account the additional considerations described above.
