HIGH PRECISION INTERFEROMETER WITH DIFFERENCE MEASUREMENT

CAPABILITY

STATEMENT OF WORK

Background

Next generation space telescopes such 10 to 12 meter class segmented Large Ultraviolet Optical Infrared (LUVOIR) observatory concepts such as the Advanced

Technology Large Aperture Space Telescope (ATLAST), and the High Definition Space Telescope (HDST) require ultra-stable structures to meet the demanding science requirements. An enabling technology is picometer class high stability structures. The need to make high-precision measurements in a vibration-intensive environment requires a high precision dynamic instantaneous spatially phase-shifting interferometer. The development of such an interferometer will allow development and testing of ultra-stable structures required for the next generation space observatories.

The contractor shall develop, assemble, and deliver a high precision dynamic instantaneous spatially phase shifting interferometer capable of measuring specular surfaces and structural deformations in diffuse structures to picometer level accuracy. The contractor shall support a kick-off meeting within two weeks of contract award, the contractor shall present a Design Review within six months of the contract award. The contractor shall support a monthly teleconference between appropriate NASA/GSFC and contractor personnel if deemed necessary by both parties.

Further, the contractor shall be responsible for assembly of the system upon delivery (arrival) at NASA/GSFC and the training of appropriate government personnel in its use and operation. Acceptance testing of the interferometer shall occur no later than 30 days after delivery to NASA/GSFC. The contractor shall warranty their product for no less than 1 year after delivery, with parts and labor for any necessary repairs inclusive.

Interferometer Specifications

100pm RMS Precision (50pm RMS Precision best effort)

High Power Laser Source - >100mW Optical Power with attenuation capability for standard specular surface measurements

High Speed Camera >500 measurements/sec @1000x1000 pixels

Diffuse surface deformation measurement capability (speckle mode)

Bi-static configuration for diffuse surface deformation measurements (separate illumination and imaging channels)

Dynamic Measurement Mode

Custom software for fast averaging– FFT Filtering

Adjustable Extended Source

Adjustable imaging aperture

The contractor shall perform an investigation to determine best hardware options including but not limited to the best option for the laser sources, high speed camera, verify high speed operation of the camera as well as the noise floor and determine solutions to achieve the required precision. The build and testing of the interferometer shall commence after the optimum design has been determined followed by installation and training.
