STATEMENT OF WORK

FOR 3D PRINTER (CODE D)

1.0 Introduction/Background: National Aeronautics and Space Administration’s (NASA) Ames Research Center (ARC) is seeking to purchase a 3D Printer System to be used to prototype advanced aerostructures and conduct aeromechanical systems research. NASA Ames Research Center is conducting a high level research program (Mission Adaptive Digital Composite Aerostructure Technologies) as part of the ARMD Convergent Aeronautics Solutions program. Important to this research will be the ability to rapidly prototype scale models of structures with complex topology, using an automated deposition process employing materials with near isotropic mechanical behavior. An example process that best meets the needs of the program is multi-jet 3D printing.

2.0 Scope of Work: The contractor shall provide for the delivery, installation, calibration, and personnel training of the 3D Printer System onsite at NASA ARC.

3.0 Applicable Documents: In order to be deemed technically acceptable, the 3D Printer System must meet the minimum specifications listed below. The contractor shall provide descriptive documentation that shows the item proposed meets these specifications.

3.1 General

3.1.1 The following specifications are for an additive manufacturing system capable of producing complex geometries. Suppliers should propose an integrated system that meets or exceeds the following specifications for the build platform, material capabilities, and supply logistics.

3.1.2 The system proposed should be designed to meet or exceed the following specifications.

3.2 Build Platform

3.2.1 The operating resolution of the printer in all three spatial dimensions shall be higher than 700 dpi (voxel size < 32 μm)

3.2.2 The total build volume for the printer at the aforementioned resolutions shall be no smaller than a cube, 150 mm on a side.

3.2.3 The minimum feature size for the printer must be smaller than 300 microns.

3.2.4 The accuracy of the printer must be better than ±0.05 mm per 25.4 mm.

3.2.5 The electronics shall include self-test diagnostics with an external display for hardware and communication status.

3.2.6 The electronics and software provided shall be a standard product, designed for additive manufacturing and installed in over 10 labs. The vendor should describe its past history of adding new software features, regular bug fixes, support of new console operating systems, and new console architectures. Custom software written to meet the above specifications is not acceptable.

3.3 Material Capabilities

3.3.1 The mechanical anisotropy of the printed material, as measured using the ASTM D-638 test with specimens printed in different orientations, for tensile loading performed in the X/Y and Z directions, shall not exceed 10%.

3.3.2 The printer shall be able to produce a sacrificial support material in addition to the structural material. This material must be designed to be entirely removed by passive dissolution, such as in a tank of low viscosity solution, without mechanical intervention exceeding ultrasonic and bulk mixing of the solution.

Extended contact with the solution cannot result in loss of integrity in small features (< 1 mm in the z direction). If exposure to dissolution agents is time-limited, suppliers should provide data on dissolution rates to substantiate claims.

3.4 Safety

3.4.1 Raw material should be supplied in cartridges, and integrated into the machine for printing with minimal operator contact to the uncured resin.

3.4.2 Disposal of uncured/waste resin should also be performed with minimal contact.

4.0 Description of Tasks/Technical Requirements: Following are the tasks to be performed for this requirement.

4.1 The contractor shall deliver all the system components to NASA ARC at the address/location specified in the Purchase Order (PO).

4.2 The Government will be responsible for uncrating the system, moving the system into its lab and providing the proper utilities for the test frame.

4.3 Once the system is moved into the lab, the contractor shall install and calibrate the system on-site by the contractor’s certified and trained service engineer.

4.4 Once the system is installed and calibrated, the contractor’s certified and trained service engineer shall perform on-site training of at least three (3) NASA ARC personnel.

4.5 The contractor must have the capability of providing timely repairs in the event of a failure, with both on-site and remote support. Your response must describe service contract availability, expected service lead times, service contract terms, and cost (e.g., yearly). It will be the responsibility of either the supplier or the contractor to provide regular maintenance to the machine to ensure continued performance within the aforementioned operating parameters, within a warrantee period of no less than one year.

5.0 Deliverables:

5.1 One (1) 3D Printer meeting the specifications in Section 3, Applicable Documents, to include at least a one-year warranty against defects in material and workmanship.

5.2 Installation, calibration and training by the contractor’s certified and trained service engineer.

5.3 Electronics and software provided shall be a standard product, designed for additive manufacturing and installed in over 10 labs.

5.4 Documentation:

5.4.1 The contractor shall provide all maintenance and operational documentation with the equipment.

5.4.2 The contractor shall provide descriptive documentation that shows the item meets the specifications in Section 3, Applicable Documents.

6.0 Period of Performance

6.1 The period of performance shall be 30 days after receipt of order (ARO).

6.2 Place of performance shall be at:

NASA Ames Research Center Moffett Field, CA 94035
