PURCHASE DESCRIPTION

1. Statement of Need and Purpose:

The motion correction system is an add-on accessory to be used with a human MRI system and is manufactured by KinetiCor Motion Correction Technologies. This Quad Camera Prospective

Motion Correction System is an investigational device intended for use in providing head pose information for the purpose of correcting MRI images in real-time. The system adjusts the scanner measurements in real-time to produce clean images without artifacts due to motion. The motion correction system will allow state of the art high quality MRI studies that are performed of patients with compromised movement disorders such as MS, Epilepsy and compromised pediatric disorders.

2. Background Information and Objective:

The Functional and Molecular Imaging Section has two major research interests. One is to develop novel functional and molecular imaging techniques to study brain structure and function.

Emphasis is on MRI but some optical imaging is performed as well. Current areas of interest are to extend spatial resolution and understand the relation of functional MRI to neuronal architecture. Images with greater spatial resolution require more time to collect and are more prone to motion artifacts. Therefore, in order to further extend spatial resolution in human MRI, the issue of subject motion needs to be addressed. The Prospective Motion Correction System is essential to NINDS as it will be used in conjunction with the new 7T MRI system and allow for high-resolution Neurological case studies at the National Institutes of Health.
