Version 11-30-2016-1 FAR Part 11—Describing Agency Needs

PURCHASE DESCRIPTION

1. Statement of Need and Purpose: The National Institute of Drug Abuse (NIDA), Office of Acquisition (OA), on behalf of the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) has a requirement for an ANT Robotic Arm System (RAS). The RAS will be used to acquire research data from study subjects and to localize anatomical landmarks for the application of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) procedures. The RAS is the industry standard robotic arm device for use with

TMS.

2. Background Information and Objective: The NIMH Noninvasive

Neuromodulation Unit (NNU), within the Experimental Therapeutics and Pathophysiology Branch (ETPB), focuses on noninvasive brain stimulation approaches to study and treat psychiatric disorders. Neuromodulation devices present new tools with which to measure and modulate plasticity in the human brain, noninvasively and with precise spatial and temporal resolution. The NNU lab will make these tools available to intramural researchers for a broad range of applications across the intramural research program, with an emphasis on the development of rapidly acting antidepressant interventions. The spatially and temporally precise induction of plasticity has utility for therapeutic intervention development across a broad range of neuropsychiatric applications. For example, a core battery of transcranial magnetic stimulation paradigms will be used to measure plasticity and glutamatergic function in response to ketamine, electroconvulsive therapy, low frequency magnetic stimulation (LFMS), magnetic seizure therapy (MST), and other pharmacological or device-based interventions, to derive common mechanisms shared by rapidly acting antidepressant interventions, and to provide a rational basis to optimize their dosimetry.
