Version 11-30-2016-1 FAR Part 11—Describing Agency Needs

PURCHASE DESCRIPTION

1. Statement of Need and Purpose:

This mobile Computed Tomography (CT) scanner system is a veterinary imaging device that will allow for the 3D scanning of macaques and marmosets, and possibly other animals as well. This will allow for the relatively quick 3D acquisition and digital construction of the bony structures in the head, facilitating the targeting of areas, construction of printed implants, and evaluation of electrode and chamber positions.

Additionally, the integrated fluoroscopy will allow for more precise implantation of electrode placement by visualizing in real time the location of the electrode as it is being placed in the brain during the surgical procedure. Not limited to the brain, this will be useful for conducting a pre-surgical myelography for more precise and successful placement of lumbar ports for collecting cerebrospinal fluid and for post-placement verification of port function and maintenance.

The high resolution and gapless imaging of this scanner will allow for better evaluation of the condition and integrity of the implants by allowing for fine differentiation of biological tissues as well as biocompatible materials.

For the veterinary staff, it will serve as a new tool for diagnoses of the head and body of not just rhesus macaques but also marmosets. One example, where this unit will fill a current need, is veterinary dentistry of animals smaller than a macaque as this will allow for the dental imaging of marmosets, rodents, etc. Additionally, the relatively quick acquisition of 3D volumetric image will facilitate the imaging of marmosets where motion of the animals makes other imaging methods challenging.

2. Background Information and Objective:

This mobile CT scanner is a veterinary device that can be used for animals as small as a mouse and as large as a mastiff dog. For our purposes, it will allow for the 3D scanning of macaques and marmosets, and possibly other animals as well. For the primate imaging community, this will allow for the relatively quick 3D acquisition and digital construction of the bony structures in the head, facilitating the targeting of areas, construction of printed implants, and evaluation of electrode and chamber positions. For the veterinary staff, it will serve as a new tool for diagnoses of the head and body.

Additionally, Dr. Raber and Dr. Worthington in the Veterinary Medical Research Branch have an interest in this scanner to complement their existing methods. As this has been in discussion for several years, the new NIF facility has built in room and power supply to accommodate a scanner such as this, and I verified that this one will fit those design specifications. We anticipate that each monkey, macaque or marmoset, can have a quick structural CT scan early on that can be useful for experiments and implants throughout their life.

3. Generic Name of Product: Computer Tomography (CT) Scanner

4. Purchase Description:

(1) Mobile CT scanner; (2) Robotic, High-Definition CT, Digital X-Ray and Fluoroscopy Platform; (3) Small Animal RHDCT/FL/DR System

5. Salient characteristics

• Mobile

• Entire system must fit within a room with dimensions of 12 ft. x 10 ft. and can transport through a standard 36 in. doorway

• Flat panel technology to serve as combined High Definition CT, Fluoroscopy and

Digital Radiography system

• Panel pixel pitch is 129u.

• In CT mode, produces volumetric, gapless data, with isotropic voxels of either

0.09, 0.15, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5, or 0.6mm.

• Be capable of providing differentiation of >12 lp/cm in all 3 dimensions and oblique angles.

• Volume of interest can be either ~15.8cm or ~31cm in diameter x 1.5cm-108cm in length (Note: resolution must not decrease with field of view increase.)

• Gantry bore is 60cm to scan length of subject; Gantry moves robotically over the table so the patient does not move during a study.

• Capable of generating stable Hounsfield Unit for all densities in a curve not significantly different from conventional MDCT and with diagnostic soft tissue contrast.

• Fluoroscopy has auto-brightness control and adjustable frame rate from 1-16fps;

can be adjusted higher if necessary for research purposes.

• Imaging area extrudes out of the bore to provide access for interventional work.

• Exposed surfaces designed to be easily cleaned and can be drapped for sterile procedures.

• Radiation dose is very significantly lower than conventional CT and maximum kV used is 110kV. It is a 15kW system. Must be sufficiently shielded to be used in the above mentioned space requirements without additional shielding built into the room.

• Powered by a dedicated 220-240v, 20 amp circuit.

• Data output conforms to DICOM 3.0 standards.
