SPECIFICATIONS

Draft-Three (3) Laser Systems

BACKGROUND:

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), and the Time and Frequency Division (688), studies the use of highly accurate optical clocks based on trapped aluminum ions. NIST requires robust laser systems for a multitude of applications, including laser cooling, neutral atom photoionization, and optical pumping.

PURPOSE:

NIST requires a high-power 1120-nm source for Doppler cooling, stimulated Raman transition, and optical repumping of magnesium ions. Additionally, NIST requires two laser sources for photoionization of neutral calcium atoms: a narrow 423-nm external-cavity diode laser and a 375-nm laser.

DELIVERABLES:

1. One 423-nm external-cavity diode laser (ECDL)

a. One spare 423-nm diode

2. One 375-nm diode laser

3. One 1120-nm tapered amplifier (TA) laser system

a. One spare 1120-nm diode for ECDL seed

b. One spare 1120-nm TA chip

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS:

The contractor shall deliver three separate laser systems that operate at 423, 375, and 1120 nm.

Additionally, both the 423 and 1120-nm laser systems should be field serviceable if any of the diodes or tapered amplifiers fail. Spare parts for all field serviceable chips shall be delivered with each respective laser.

375-nm laser specifications:

• Center wavelength: 375 nm

• Minimum output power: 70 mW

• Power stability o CW (continuous wave) source o less than 0.5% drift over 48 hours

• Pointing stability: < 10 microradians / K

• Polarization:

o Linear o extinction ratio of 100:1 or greater o Vertical alignment

• Beam quality o Single spatial mode output

Gaussian mode

• Beam height: 19 mm

• Form factor of 40 x 40 x 100 cubic millimeters (H x W x D) or smaller

• All the above specifications must be met within +/-5 degrees Celsius of room temperature (23 C)

423-nm ECDL (external cavity diode laser) specifications:

• Operating wavelength: 422.8 nm

• Minimum output power: >25 mW o CW source

• Laser linewidth: < 100 kHz

• Mode-hop-free (MHF) tuning range: >= 25 GHz o Single frequency mode, narrow linewidth operation of MHF tuning range

• Polarization: Linear

• Optical isolator: > 35 dB isolation

• Temperature sensitivity (laser frequency): < 100 MHz / K

• Must provide a spare 423-nm diode that is capable of meeting all of the above specifications o System must be field serviceable, i.e. diodes can be exchanged in place without return to factory.

• Fast AC/DC current modulation input on laser head o Modulation bandwidth > 10 MHz

1120-nm ECDL / TA (tapered amplifier) combo light source:

• Center wavelength: 1120 nm

• Wavelength tuning range: 1115 to 1130 nm o Must meet all specs at 1118 and 1122 nm

• Output power:

o Maximum: 2 W o Fiber coupled: > 1 W o CW source

• Laser linewidth: < 100 kHz at 5 us

• Modular fiber-coupled output:

o Removable module attached to laser head, used to fiber couple the light at the output of the TA in a compact manner o Power out of fiber should be no less than 1 W Gaussian mode o Module designed for a FC/APC polarization maintaining fiber

• Polarization: Linear

• Optical isolators o > 30 dB isolation after ECDL source (before TA chip) o >60 dB isolation at high power output of TA chip

• Temperature sensitivity (laser frequency): < 100 MHz / K

• Must provide a spare 1120-nm diode that is capable of meeting all of the above specifications o System must be field serviceable, i.e. the diode can be exchanged in place without return to factory.

• Must provide a spare 1120-nm TA chip that is capable of meeting all of the above specifications o System must be field serviceable, i.e. the TA chip can be exchanged in place without return to factory.

• Fast AC/DC current modulation input for ECDL seed laser o Modulation bandwidth > 10 MHz

TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS:

The 375-nm is a backup for an existing Toptica-brand IBeam-Smart-375-S. This laser must have a form factor, output beam height, and output beam polarization compatible with the existing lab infrastructure. Detailed numbers are provided in the TECHINCAL SPECIFICATIONS section.

The 423-nm laser must have an output greater than 25 mW and the laser’s frequency must be robust against ambient temperature fluctuations (laser frequency drift << 100 MHz/K).

The 1120-nm source must have at least 1 W of power at the output of a fiber and must have a tuning range of between 1115 to 1130 nm.
