SPECIFICATIONS

Phase-noise/Spectrum Analyzer

BACKGROUND:

The Time and Frequency Metrology group requires a high-quality spectrum and phase noise analyzer (SPNA) that operates from a few MHz to 50 GHz. Our group routinely performs different types of phase noise measurements and calibrations of oscillators and two-ports devices from a few MHz to THz frequency range.

PURPOSE:

We require a high-performance 50 GHz Spectrum/ Phase-noise Analyzer to support calibration services.

DELIVERABLES:

One 50 GHz Phase-noise/Spectrum Analyzer with the following options:

a. RF Spectrum Analyzer 2 Hz - 50 GHz

b. Cross-spectrum phase noise analyzer 1MHz – 50 GHz

c. Cross-spectrum amplitude noise analyzer 1 MHz-50 GHz

d. Baseband Noise Analyzer with two inputs

e. External generator control

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS:

A. The RF spectrum analyzer option must meet the following specifications:

· RF Input frequency range: 10 MHz to 50 GHz (required). Option for upgrade to higher carrier frequencies is desirable.

· Analysis Bandwidth: 10 MHz or greater

· Displayed Average Noise Level (DANL) with pre amp off:

9 kHz ≤ f ≤ 1 GHz ≤ –145 dBm 1 GHz ≤ f ≤ 8 GHz ≤ –150 dBm 8 GHz ≤ f ≤ 25 GHz ≤ –145 dBm 25 GHz ≤ f ≤ 34 GHz ≤ –140 dBm 34 GHz < f ≤ 40 GHz ≤ –137 dBm 40 GHz < f ≤ 43.5 GHz ≤ –135 dBm

43.5 GHz < f ≤ 47 GHz ≤ –133 dBm

47 GHz < f ≤ 49 GHz ≤–131 dBm 49 GHz < f ≤ 50 GHz ≤ –129 dBm

· Spurious image responses < -90 dBc and residual response < -100 dBm from 1 MHz to 50 GHz

· Phase noise sidebands at a center frequency of 1 GHz:

· -80 dBc/Hz or lower at 10 Hz offset

· < -100 dBc/Hz at 100 Hz offset

· <-125 dBc/Hz at 1 kHz offset

· < -135 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset

· < -135 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz offset

· < -145 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset

· <-155 dBc/Hz at 10 MHz offset

B. The phase noise analyzer option must meet the following specifications:

1. Must have an upgrade path for making residual/additive noise measurements.

2. Phase noise sensitivity must be lower or equal to that listed in Table1 with cross correlation option

Table1: Phase noise (dBc/Hz), correlation factor = 1
