SPECIFICATIONS
SQUID Magnetometer
NB 687090-18-02495
BACKGROUND:
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) currently has a need to magnetically characterize ferromagnetic films and devices. The films and devices are typically only a few atomic layers thick and/or hundreds of nanometers wide. Thus, the magnetometry used to characterize them needs to be very sensitive. NIST also requires the measurements to be calibrated to an absolute standard and to be performed between 2 K and 400 K. A magnetometer based upon a superconducting quantum interference device will allow such measurements to be performed.
PURPOSE:
The Spin Electronics Group (687.09) of the Quantum Electromagnetics Division, NIST- Boulder, along with the Nanoscale Spin Dynamics group (687.04) and the Biomedical Imaging group (686.08) need to procure a SQUID-Based Magnetometer System for in-line and end-of-line process control monitoring of a variety of different films and devices between 3 K and 400 K.
SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:
The contractor shall delivery one (1) SQUID-Based Magnetometer System to include the following technical specifications:
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS:
1. System shall be compatible with samples greater than or equal to 8 mm x 8 mm
2. Measurement temperature range shall be a minimum of 3 K to 400 K.
3. The system shall allow for cooling to 4 K though use of liquid He.
4. System shall have a sensitivity of at least 3 x10-8 emu in fields below 0.2 T and at least 1 x10-7 emu at maximum field. The maximum DC moment measurable shall be at least 8 emu.
5. The system shall allow for the application of a large range of magnetic fields:
a. a. A maximum magnetic field applied to the sample shall be at least -7 T to +7 T
b. Field uniformity within sample measurement space shall be at least 0.01% over 4 mm
c. Shall allow for 24-bit resolution control of applied magnetic field
d. Shall have a remnant field of less than 0.5 mT (5 Oe) after full field is applied without need for intervention. Shall have a remnant field of less than 0.5 mT (5 Oe) after full field is applied without need for intervention. Superconducting magnet shall be able to be quenched in order to achieve a remnant field of less than 0.5 Oe
e. System shall be magnetically shielded
6. The system shall allow for temperature control of the sample:
a. Temperature control shall be fully automated via software over the entire operating range
b. System shall not use any manually-operated valves to control temperatures
7. System shall operate on either 120 VAC or 208 VAC with less than 15 A.
8. Liquid He reservoir shall have a capacity of at least 60 L
9. The system shall be externally controllable through a GPIB port or USB port
10. A basic sample mount shall be provided
11. Unit shall comply with basic safety requirements in dealing with cryogenic systems
12. System shall not be used.
13. Liquid He reservoir shall be at least 50 L.
TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS:
1. System shall minimize liquid He boil-off when ramping field through use of high-temperature superconducting leads possibly thermally anchored to a liquid N2 reservoir.
Ideally, the system shall consume less than 6 L of liquid He per day when not in use.
2. System shall be upgradable to include liquid He3 inserts, optical inserts, and VSM inserts without the need for the system to be shipped back to manufacturer.
3. The system shall be complete and operational on delivery.
4. Basic on-site operational training, including up to 4 NIST researchers, shall be included with the installation.
5. Shipping shall be included in the cost estimate.
6. At least 10 similar systems shall have been installed in the US and supply contact information for at least 5 of those purchasers.
7. System shall have a minimal footprint.
8. Vendors shall have available parts and repair personnel within the US mainland.
9. Field ramp rate shall be maximized.
10. Time on delivery shall be minimized.
11. At highest field, system shall minimize magnetic field projected externally from the system
12. System shall include all manuals and the manufacturer should routinely offer telephone support during the normal work hours of Boulder, CO.
13. Sample loading and turn-around times shall be minimized.
14. Larger liquid He reservoir is preferred.
DELIVERY:
1. Delivery shall be FOB DESTINATION and take place twenty-four (24) weeks from ARO unless mutually agreed upon the Government’s ability to receive earlier.
2. In accordance with 52.247-35, the Contactor shall deliver the system to:
NIST
325 Broadway Boulder CO, 80305.
INSTALLATION:
1. After consultation with NIST the contractor shall determine if a site inspection is required before delivery.
2. The contractor shall be responsible for uncrating and placing the system.
3. NIST will install all required facility hookups to the system.
4. The Contractor shall perform the initial startup of the system during a mutually agreed upon installation/training session.
TESTING AND INSPECTION:
1. The Spin Electronics Group (687.09) will physically inspect the optical table system to verify that it meets the requirements listed in the technical specifications.
2. Final acceptance will be determined within 30 calendar days after tool commissioning and user training is completed.
WARRANTY:
One-year warranty shall be included.
SECURITY:
N/A
