Specifications Mobile, Oil-free Turbo Pumping System

Background The Quantum Sensors Group (QSG) at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Boulder Laboratories seeks a mobile, oil-free pumping station to evacuate cryogenic apparatus to high vacuum.

The QSG develops electronics that operate at temperatures near 1 K. Achieving these temperatures requires an apparatus that is evacuated to high volume before the start of the cooling cycle. The electronics developed by the QSG include sensors for materials analysis, nuclear security, and astrophysics.

Objectives The Government seeks to purchase a mobile, oil-free pumping station to evacuate cryogenic apparatus to high vacuum. A mobile system is required so that it can service multiple pieces of cryogenic apparatus in different laboratories. An oil-free system is required to eliminate the risk of oil contamination in expensive and fragile apparatus. A system that achieves high vacuum is required so as to achieve sufficient thermal isolation for later cooling to temperatures of 1 K and below.

Scope The Government expects to take delivery of a pumping station that fulfills the specifications listed below.

Upon delivery of the unit, the Government expects to receive documentation for the pumping station necessary to operate the unit and perform basic maintenance.

Tasks

(1) Manufacture of a mobile turbo pumping station with the following specifications and containing the following components:

a. Mobile cart with as small a physical footprint as possible

b. A turbo pump with 250 l/s pumping speed (for N2) or greater and a theoretical base pressure of 10-8 Torr or lower.

c. An oil-free backing pump for the turbo with a pumping speed in excess of 200 liters/min

(12 m3/hr).

d. An ISO coupling flange of size 100 or larger.

e. Control electronics for the turbo and backing pump

f. Pressure gauging to span the range from atmosphere to the base pressure of the turbo

g. Readout electronics for the gauging

h. All necessary cabling

i. Unit must run on single phase, 110V AC power (North American)

j. Components that reduce the noise emitted by the unit are desirable but not essential.

(2) Delivery of all equipment in (1) to the NIST Boulder Laboratories.

(3) Warranty for up to 1 year of operation

Delivery

• Hardware delivered to the NIST Boulder Laboratories 10 weeks or less ARO
