BACKGROUND:

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has a program to develop Rydberg atom-based RF field detectors. As a part of this effort, several laser systems must be frequency locked. The ability to lock the laser frequency to specific frequencies within a large range is of particular importance.

PURPOSE:

The RF Fields Group requires an optical cavity system capable of locking the frequencies of 4 lasers of different wavelengths to a reference cavity.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

1. One cavity with anti-reflective coatings for 4 wavelength ranges.

2. Ion pump.

3. Vacuum housing.

4. Temperature controller.

5. Mode-matching optics for coupling to the cavity from optical fibers for four lasers.

6. Electro-optic modulators and RF sources for generating a Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) error signal and capable of tuning across the free-spectral range of the cavity.

SPECIFICATIONS:

PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATIONS:

1. Anti-reflective (AR) coatings on the optical cavity with a target finesse of 5000 for the following wavelength ranges:

a. 780 nm

b. 852 nm

c. 950 - 970 nm

d. 1016 - 1026 nm

2. Fiber collimators to mode-match to the cavity for each of the wavelength ranges above in (1).

3. Electro-optic modulators (EOMs) and RF source with offset locking capability for each of the wavelength ranges in (1).

a. EOMs must be tunable across the free-spectral range of the cavity.

b. RF source must be capable of generating an offset PDH error signal for offset locking. The offset frequency must tune across the free-spectral range of the cavity.

4. Cavity housing including vacuum housing, vacuum pump, temperature controller, and windows AR coated to specs in (1).

5. A measurement of the zero-crossing temperature will be provided. The cavity housing must be able to be tuned to the zero-crossing temperature.

6. Including all the needed locking electronics.

7. Including all parts and electronics to operates the system as intended.

TECHNICAL CONSIDERATIONS:

The system must be new. No used or refurbished systems will be considered.

QUANTITY: 1 EACH

DELIVERY:

1. Delivery shall be FOB DESTINATION and take place six (6) weeks from ARO unless mutually agreed upon the Government’s ability to receive earlier.

2. In accordance with 52.247-35, the Contractor shall deliver the system to:

NIST

325 Broadway Boulder CO, 80305.

INSTALLATION:

N/A

TESTING AND ACCEPTANCE:

1. The RF Fields Group (672.02) will physically inspect the optical reference cavity system, connect the system to the four lasers currently installed at NIST, and test that the cavity system is capable of locking the frequencies of the four lasers to verify that it meets the requirements listed in the technical specifications.

2. Final acceptance will be determined within 30 calendar days after delivery.

WARRANTY:

One-year warranty shall be included.

SECURITY CONSIDERATIONS:

N/A
