SPECIFICATIONS

Signal Generator

NB 672010-19-02914

BACKGROUND:

The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Communications Technology Laboratory (CTL) enables science and industry by providing essential measurement methods, instrumentation, and standards to support all phases of communications technology development, from fundamental discovery to production.

To support research and measurement services in radio frequency and microwave power, the Radio Frequency Technology Division in CTL requires a microwave signal generator. This instrumentation is needed for CTL to advance the state-of-the-art in microwave power measurements and to support 5G communication, spectrum sensing, and modulated-wave metrology.

PURPOSE:

The Radio Frequency Electronics Group (672.01) requires a microwave signal generator.

SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

1. Shall generate signals in a frequency range that spans a minimum of 100 kHz to 67 GHz.

2. Shall have a 1.85 mm coaxial output connector.

3. Shall have high output power. Minimum specified output powers as follows:

Frequency range Minimum specified power*

100 kHz to 10 MHz 12 dBm >10 MHz to 30 GHz 13 dBm > 30 GHz to 65 GHz 9 dBm > 65 GHz to 67 GHz 8 dBm

*With low-phase noise mode turned off, if equipped.

4. Shall have a minimum settable power of -75 dBm or lower.

5. Shall have low harmonics below 2 GHz. Maximum harmonic power at +10 dBm output as follows:

Frequency range Maximum harmonic power

100 kHz to 10 MHz -30 dBc >10 MHz to 2 GHz -45 dBc >2 GHz to 67 GHz -50 dBc

6. Shall include capabilities for amplitude modulation (AM), frequency modulation (FM), and phase modulation (PM). Modulation must be controllable with an analog input.

7. Shall include a rack mount flange kit.

8. The system must be new. No used or refurbished systems will be considered.
